What 140 hp second hand tractor to buy?

25hp/furr is ample. I started pulling 4x12" furrows with a 70hp Ford 5600! (still got it) Then 4 14's with a 2wd 399. Similar time a contractor we worked with had 6x14" behind a 130hp MF2680 & 8x16" behind a TW30!

5x14" with press behind a MF6480 is our current rig. Press roughly equivalent to an extra furrow. Some folk dont understand the difference between an engine governing and an engine struggling.

I predict the current obsession with hp will reduce as tractor prices continue to increase. For years, every replacement tractor we bought was bigger than its predessor - for the last 10yrs that hasn't happened - and we've more work than back then. Trying to achieve more with less tractor hours without increasing hp, by altering our methods. So far so good.
You are on spud land obviously!!
More furrows does not always mean more speed!

We have a kiln on the farm, once used for firing drainage tiles. The ponds here were where the clay came from!

It's far more economical to increase output by adding furrows rather than speed, particularly over 4.5mph.

Example:
150hp will pull 5f at 5mph (say)
Which is easier to add 20% output, an extra furr or an extra mph?

The extra furr means less turning, so more than 20% extra output, assuming the same operating speed.
5-6mph takes a lot more hp and decreases the quality of work.

in 2012 our 250 horse tractor couldnt pull a 6 furr kv semi mounted through all the wet holes.
Had to put 350hp on the front

That's because of weight and grip, I'd wager, rather than a deficit of power?

Arguably you'd of been better waiting for better conditions.

Adding the extra furr costs ££££
Plus the tractor may not lift it
I had a 5 f mounted kv that kept breaking the bolts at the front on turning ram
I took the 5th firr off and it never gave any trouble again

Semi mounted solves this - second hand cheap compared to mounted.
I have a 6f Dowdeswell MA120 that kept destroying the depth wheel adjusters - removed 6th furrow, no more problem.
We plough much less than we did - bit of a rotational thing - pre and post beet usually, and barley after wheat. Most but not all the spud ground.

My first plough bought by me was a dp6 5 f srmi mounted.
It was immaculate from the dealer, a trade in for £100

Don’t you just love TFF:)

Pretty much every mention of MF on here is nothing but how unreliable they are, how cheap the components in them are, how poorly designed the cab layout is, how awful the dyna 6 box is, what does error code blah, blah, blah mean?

What’s the best 140-150hp secondhand tractor out there?
Easy one that. Altogether now.........................................
It has to be a MF6480:LOL:

Sometimes me thinks the power of TFF is overrated;)

ha ha i think production number must impact it too, there must be loads of6480s about as it was such a popular model. Incidental i was looking at NH range commands (local guy has one) googling them what the first thing that comes up : https://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index.php?threads/t7-200-gearbox-problems.234512/

numerous other people then post saying they have had same issues,

thing is every time there is a thread they dont all now jump on it slating the brand to death, i dont think i need to name anyone! ;)

everything brakes down apart from fendts obviously
