In other countries the '''Golden cross" seem more popular. This is Ho X Red X Je.

It's worth following Drumgoon dairy on FB, it's an Irish man who started with 20 cows in 1982 then gradually built up to 200ac which he sold in 2006 and emigrated to South Dakota and now milks 4500 golden cross cows.

I’ve been by his place. Cold as hell up there in winter.

Housed. 12000 litres plus.

It's forecast minus 35 in that area tonight with wind chill down to minus 50.

There's a good quote from his somewhere about how he made enough money on the high milk prices in 2014 to fund the entire build of a 3000 cow unit from cashflow.

Assuming around 2000 cows in 2014 at $29/cwt he would have been grossing about £14million. Figure a $17 cwt cop and he had some cash to play with.

With crosses and the demand for components in that area it was likely higher.

Brother lives your side of the pond. We asked him a few years ago when S Dakota was promoting itself in the Farmers Weekly what is it like? "There's Mount Rushmore and thats about it'" was a summary of the reply.

Certainly looks a bit cool today

So are you largely using LIC crossbred bulls now?

Are the Irish black and whites a bigger animal than the NZ ones?

I have quite a lot in calf to Irish HF at the moment and can't decide what to buy for this year.
This yr we will be mostly using lic- top notch(fr) lynbrook krypton (j8f7a1) and Arkansas beaut(f9j7) sexed

The Irish seem to look after themselves rather than me.

As in fat fresians that give bugger all milk? My concern with the Irish was that they might be a bit holsteiny and not be able to look after themselves.

I'm trying a couple of Irish as 4m sexed and then Misty (J) and Cairo (F) from LIC

At -1.43 chest width and -2.77 rump width, -0.49 overall mammary, I'm curious to know why you would use Lightning on your Jerseys. Do you just select on EBI ?

I think they are measured on a Holstein base so all the stature, chest width, rump width etc are almost bound to be negative.

One of the main things that puts me off the Irish bulls I the lack of type information available.

My selection of four Irish bulls is only going to total 80 straws out of 500 dairy straws.
