I think you’ll find they’re sciarid flies. As I understand it, they haven’t been in this country very long. We had them in our human consumption broad beans in early summer.

They are not sciarid flies AKA fungus gnats unless your grainstore is very wet indeed. You might be thinking of the 2mm spotted wing fruit fly that lays its eggs in ripening fruit but its gob is too small to injure grains and beans, even immature ones. Been around for ten years since arriving from China. Right bustard in cherries and other soft fruit.

The marks on your beans are something else - capsid bug or stain virus I think.

I favour the flying ant theory.
