What can and cannot run on red diesel from March 1. 2021

From what I was told there will be no such thing as red, all white and we have to claim the duty back.
Dont the government go on about this every year then the nfu claim they got the government to put it off again
I cant see it working
Farmers will be claiming for everything and pikeys will be nicking it and no chance of customs stopping them and dipping the tanks

All I know is I was talking to both a UFU guy and a HMRC guy and they both said the paperwork is done and it's ready to go. HMRC said they accept that in Agri there will be a chance to exploit it but that market is very very small compared to the amount of domestic vehicles currently running about on red that this targets, also does away with dipping and enforcement. This will all be policed by record keeping and a computer. As far as thefts go, as usual we will be on our own.

but most of those running around on red have stolen it, so it will make very little difference and if there is cheating on farms in future I suspect those same individuals will be cheating already.
How many ever get dipped? I have never been and have been driving over 50 years and most of that in Derv powered vehicles

Wouldn't say everyone on red has stolen it. Local unmanned fuel station in local industrial estate has queues at the red pumps every night and early morning mostly beemers and mercs. The amount of joe blogs on red is vast as if the get caught they only get £500 fine, unlike a business.

The article below has a lot of detail, the problem bit for those of us who fall into both construction and Agri is the switching machines between red and white.🤔

It's going to be a bit tricky hiring machines from a hire company too.

If you hire a 13t machine for farm work in theory you can run it on red.
But will the hire company let you based on their T's and C's?

Most machines arrive on site full of fuel and leave full of fuel or you get charged for it (at £1/litre or so).
Trouble is most machines would therefore arrive full of white, which you'd be charged for......then you'd fill it up with red when it leaves.

I have heard of a few construction companies sometimes give their employees a tank of red as a bonus at the end of the week.

Can’t see them handing out white
very generous of them to deliberately put their staff on the wrong side of the law, only needs one disgruntled employee to make a phone call and they would all be in deep do da

Are we all going white? Somewhere I read that we will be on white and will reclaim the difference back? That will be the pick up getting filled as well😉

However all this is going to lead to is a torrent of fuel thefts but the government don't give a dam

Currently if I buy less than 2300l fuel it is deemed to be domestic usage so it’s billed at 5% VAT. If I order more than that it’s billed at 20% VAT.

I can fill in an exemption certificate to reduce this to 5% VAT for all orders.

Surely the same system could apply to the actual duty on the diesel…? The fuel companies could then just supply white and the farmer does a declaration. Would save needing to pay the duty and then claim it back.
