Not sure its a safety thing, more convenience, after all a seat belt can restrain a 20 stone person, but as with all child seats they have to be installed correctly.Maybe not, but atleast i want my child to be as safe as possible when she's travelling in a car.
I'd really like a MB R-series.
We’ve got a xc 60 and it has the family pack on it which basically means the outside 2 seat have built in booster cushions, so the eldest sits on the and uses the normal seatbelt. When the middle lad is big enough he will sit at the other side and the youngest in the rear middle in his car seat.
Multimac make a special bench multi child seat that will fit across the back seat of almost any car. We had their 3 seat version in our BMW i3 that is normally only a 2 seater in the back. Great quality and very safe. Quite expensive new but they can be found second hand. (Ours is now for sale).
Our other car is a Volvo XC90 which we’ve had for 10 years and takes the whole family + 5 bikes (including a tandem!) with ease.
The older it gets, the more I appreciate just how good the Volvo is.
Qashqai is too small and narrow. I know, because my cowman and I have one each. Actually, our women have them.Pop to the Nissan dealership at Wellington. My mate had exactly this problem, I cannot remember which model but it was the larger one than the duke he ended up with. They looked after him there aswell

X-Trail isn't much wider and is now basically a longer Qashqai with seven seats. It's about Honda CR-V size. From googling images it looks like a newer model x trail they had
