24ft NH CX8070 12yr old here between two farms & no more than 700 odd acres to cut
but you need all of it when the weather as it does ni on every year without fail give you headaches & wheat still ave moisture of 18.5%
same area used to be cut by two 15ft NH's a 1989 8070 & 1997 TX64
that one machine is pretty much matching running the two older ones. & saving man power & single T&T

There's not 80 hours of sunshine at his altitude or latitude! ;)

must be a lot of low hour combines up in yorkshire if you only get 80 hrs of combining weather a year :scratchhead:

Depends on what esle you do, i want to be able to do a similar acreage over a couple of weekends or days off

:scratchhead:musta missed the op's bit about wanting to do it part time

cut more wet corn with a big combine than a small one;)

when they were new i knew of 1 cutting almost 2000ac and personally worked with one that did 700 ac easily. 160ac is 3 days work only. I wish I could afford such combine capacity. I'm just jealous (y)
our 15ft 8070 did all harvest here right thru the nineties mostly quite easily, then the weather patterns changed sort of early 2000's & by 2005 neighbour helped us every year.
i think it was 1996 we fin on last day of August, wheat all cut the lot, dont think we had any wheat cut last harvest before start of sept
we chase the weather every year now. you tech need twice the cap you can afford

Why is it that combines have the reputation of being so problematic? Is it because they are dormant for 11 months of the year. Engines should laugh at 5k hours like gearbox and diff, and hydrostatic the same if kept clean. So is the main problem bearings and belts? Only asking as we are thinking the same as the OP.

I think that's a pretty fair generalisation. Sheer number of moving parts........

Sub 50 threshing hours last summer and was still having to cut at 24% at one point.

maybe could have got it a bit drier but quality would have suffered and im the combine driver and baler man. And yes we had straw get wet and need turning as well.

We grow about 100 acre wheat and barley and probably cut an additional 60.

Currently running a mf 29 but its forever back in the yard with breakdowns.

Budget perhaps around 20k.

Open for ideas and/or offers

Don't ignore later small model MF machines, the 30/32/7250/7252 have a much better reputation than the 24,27,29,31 models.
The bigger sizes of MF combine get a poor rep on here because a few have been trouble, but as with everything else big tackle starts life on large farms and is worked hard, whereas smaller models were bought for more modest acreages.
Find a low/modest hour small MF combine and you will get a newer, less worked machine for your money.

1/ if they only get 80 hrs combing weather in yorkshire/season a 20 yr old combine would only have a maximum 1600 hrs on the clock
2/ op didn't state they were doing the 160 ac purely at 'weekends' or 'coupla days off'

No the second one was me sorry as you asked why people always recommend big combines but why would you buy something small when you can big up a big combine for similar money

You can make anything last forever if you want. It helps if its been cared for all its life first though
