What deters the thief?

I doubt that there is the spirit for turning traveller sites over to find stolen tools, even if you could tell them your chainsaw was there.
They will all be in a van with false plates that "arrived in the night Guvnor" and nobody saw a thing.

Automatic gates is number 1 deterrent

Crime prevention told me this a few years ago when we were having a lot of trouble and sinse fitting we have had no problems

Criminals are always looking for the escape route, even if a gate lets them in they don't know if it will let them out again

CCTV is a waste of money, you just get to watch yourself being robed ! In my experience police will not use the footage even when it clearly identified the thief
One of the favourite burglar tools is a HI AB. Made short work of a neighbours gate and lifted his quad.

Slightly off topic.
I think that someone or company that can come up with a miniature tracker, that could be installed inside an old chain saw etc, would be able to make a fortune.
My idea is that if a gps Tracker could be fiitted inside the cylinder head of an old chainsaw , etc, the clapped out saw would be taken by thieves with the good ones ,BUT the tracker inside the clapped out saw could lead police to their premises. The same type of gps could be installed in all sorts of small tools that are beyond repair e.g electric drill, impact wrench etc ,which the thieves would take with the good tools, and the tracker in side once activated would lead police to the stolen goods ,and hopefully the thieves.
I have mentioned this idea before,no apologies for mentioning it yet again

I'd say from experience trackers or gps are a waste of time when it comes to the transit and caravan brigade helping themselves to your stuff . When I worked in Berkshire after leaving college we had 2 quads nicked by pikeys and after a good few days the police tracked them to the site, struggled to get them back and they gave the whole shpeel about the quads turning up and they had no idea where they came from etc and got away scot free. Yeah we got the quads back eventually but the ones gearbox was completely nackered after being ragged around so much by the little sods and the other was smashed up pretty badly, maybe used in another thieving session .

Our former local Police force supplied us with a "replacement" electric fencer unit, fitted with a tracking device. It was duly nicked and subsequently tracked to the next door shed to a well known local petty thief's house. The last I heard from the officer who lent it us, was that they were unwilling to retrieve the unit as it wasn't on their suspects premises!!!

Dogs have to be the best, we have 6 dogs in kennels on the yard which make an almighty racket if anybody slows down or pulls up, without knowing our yard well you wouldn't know whether the dogs were loose or not. We have a through road but never had anything stolen.

Coin sized GPS tracking device.... https://www.thetrackr.com
App on your phone.
Go round scrotes house with a baseball bat. :)
Needs a lot of people using the app.
If your item goes missing, the TrackR app records its last known location on a map. When another TrackR app user comes within Bluetooth range of your lost item, its location will be automatically updated in your app.

...and let it be known that the kennels gates can be opened remotely with one of those gadgets for opening garage doors.;)

Why do we have to put up with these thieving scum? The Police are powerless to do much, the courts do nothing, some of my neighbours are so fed up with the current situation they are saying they will take the Law in to there own hands.

Fully agree with the sentiment, but whereas the plod always seem to lack the resources to effectively respond to and investigate theft, they always seem to have the time and manpower to clamp down on anyone who does try to protect themselves and their property.

Cameras and an alarm system. As much as it is tempting to, I really wouldn't take the law into your own hands. Criminal law has developed extensively to protect property owners, but a lot of times your (plural) reaction to a situation might be escalated because you're angry etc etc. Basically, you might end up doing something you didn't originally intend to do and go down yourself.

Honestly wouldn't risk it. Get a good security system installed. It's not fair at all, but it's the best you can do.

Can't think of anything better than dogs really, although the poisoning aspect up-thread gives me the shudders. Do they really do that to get them out of the way?

Alarms always get tripped and ignored and geese will make a racket but could have been spooked by anything. Only dogs have the potential to act as both an alarm system, but also as a punishment system that won't come back on you.

Had our tipper truck nicked today at 07.30. Dad saw the barsteward but couldn't get there in time.
Now fully expect further visits to collect other bits that were eyed up. Has anyone used the really sound sirens type alarm near horses? Keen to hear how it affects livestock if alarm is triggered when they are housed close by
