What did you build over Christmas?

Christmas is a long way off but do you recon that a portable, battery powered, Alexa could be fitted into a teddy to make an educational toy for the grandkids? Or ……. could a static bike be wired to a small generator to run a TV. set up on the handle bars, and to watch TV one would have to peddle?

I joked about doing the latter for my father when he watches the Tour De France. How much power does a TV need though, I recall that maintain a power output on a bike of about 1 kW for a minuet is reasonable for high level cyclists.

I was guessing that 12v would be sufficient to run a portable tv. But then again, would it be possible rig a small voltage to a mains adaptor that would only allow mains voltage to pass to a large tv if the bike was being peddled?

Just crazy, out of the box, thinking I suppose!

We have a static bile that was built to run a shearing handpiece. We quickly converted it to run a tractor Dynamo as part of an electrical lesson and hooked it up to a lighting rig! Peddling was ok with side lights and brake lights etc on, it was the 55w worklamps that were the challenge!!!

I just had a quick google and a moderate size LED telly should be under 100 W and could be quite a bit lower, so it shouldn't be that arduous on the legs to keep powering it just from peddling.
I can remember back to a time before led stuff on bikes, to see at night there was a dynamo thingy that folded down against the back wheel to power a light, it fairly put the brakes on and of course when you tired or you slowed down the light would flicker no brighter than a candle.

Thought I would go on a mechanics refresher training course last weekend just to brush up on my skills like?

Got a mini video but it wont up load?
Got a little motor, timing belt cam shaft and rockers, valves etc
Distributor and little led lights for spark plug light up in sequence.

Didnt build it as such cause it's ready to run out the box but I tinker with this quite alot!
Jump it off them ramps anywhere between 8 and 12ft high and around 25ft long. Not mastered a front flip yet but backflips no problems?

I also remember those flip over dynamos that used the side of the tyre to drive the small wheel that drove the generation of electricity to run the lamps on the bike. I also remember some of the posher bikes that had a condenser in the circuitry that smoothed out the problem of dimming bike lamps.

I have just done a search on the internet and there are a few ideas for using a static bike for generating low voltage electricity.

Many thanks for all the replies folks.

It amazes me how many people still go to work over christmas :) If you want to get away from extended family go out for the day, but don't go to work to tinker and play.
