What do you think this winter wheat will yield?

I know this is perhaps a difficult question to answer, but this is the first time I've ever grown wheat, we are a small dairy farm and are going to feed it to the cows and I'm just wondering with all this dry weather now what yield can we expect off this?

Like if we were to get some rain in June or if we weren't type of scenarios... thank you in advance...

Take your pick of anything between 10t - 3t /Ha. It’s looking pretty good (if a little short and stressed) to me, just needs a good drink.

is it long out of grass ?
had a lot of muck / slurry down the years ?

Yes it was grass for 15 years before and recieved muck in the form of slurry most years, however we couldn't get any on last Autumn before drilling because of the wet. We ploughed and combi drilled it on the same day 28th October 2019. The variety is Graham.

It's on medium clay loam ground. We're mid Staffordshire and like most people have had no meaningful rain since March...

Your getting his hopes with 3.6 tonne in this dry time. Bit optimistic i would say. Looks a good crop for the year though. I think 3.25 tops

in past years crops can yield much better than they look
in the 1980 we could grow 10 tonnes with that much n after grass and muck
plenty of sun can give high yields despite low rainfall
an inch a month inthe past has given over 10 tonnes
need the inch in June and sun to fill

On medium clay loam I think it will hang on alright even without further rain and yield just over 3t per acre maybe more. The humus under it feet will help. Next year you will see a bigger release of nitrogen from the ploughed down grass.
I’d be pleased with that wheat.

My low is probably a fair bit too low given the history and it’s not looking too thirsty yet. I think if it’s really thirsty when a crop finishes flowering it’s game over even if rains come. I don’t think you’ll be in that situation looking again at your pictures. So I’ll raise my estimate to 10t-6t/Ha.

A good condition medium clay loam is the stuff to have this year, have a dig, there's probably still moisture available. If it doesn't rain it will probably compensate to some extent with higher bushel weight, on similar soil we achieve best quality when it seems too dry

I think he said it was graham. My dairy farmer mate always upsets me, 4t/acre is like falling off a log, normally with just 2 fungicides and a blw spray.
