Does anyone know the best engine oil for my 1976 db995, I've been advised to use suto 15/30, does this sound about right and I'd be paying about £45 for 20l is this a fair price?

I insist on 20/30. It’s not easy to find but I persevere, all of mine do well on it.

Clean oil, changed often! You don’t need super fancy all singing oil. They were never made for it.

15/30 will do if your not as keen as I am. I’d not put 15/40 in it myself, but I know some that do.

Engine will take the same as hydraulics/gearbox.

Cleanliness is king! Especially in the hydraulics!

I've been using 15/40 because it was convenient but I think you're right to stay away from it. I've got what looks like oil around the top of the exhaust and the oil pressure light will flicker when the oil has done around 100 hours.

My IH 414 and IH 475 use John Deere Plus 11 oils and have done for several years. So far touch wood they are going well. In the winter I use both of them every day.

As an aside, my 475 was a swine to start in cold weather, belching out smoke and just starting when the battery is nearly shot. I put on an Iskra/Mahle high speed starter and she starts with a click of the key. The tractor is transformed.

I wonder why that is? You would think that the 15w40 would have more scope in hot and cold weather.

Often theory and practice are completely different. It could be because it doesn't do much in the way of heavy work, it maybe doesn't get up to its full operating temperature most of the time it's running.
