What feeder wagon

Dont know if this should be in a different forum, but does anyone have any good recommendations on second hand mixer wagons to feed 200+ beef cattle. Tub mixer or Keenan style? Any good places to buy them? Don't want to spend a fortune but don't want real cheap thing that'll break down every five mins. Don't know too much about the various makes and types so any info would be appreciated!

Don't think keenan tend to rate so high on the mix quality but their re furbs are value for money, bought one as a second machine for beef when I was milking, must have done 8 years feeding 250 a day without a penny spent on it. Cue disaster tomorrow!!

Tmr, simple ration gone through the re furb, grass silage, Trafford gold, mineral and chopped straw, the straw is chopped prior to keenan as had a McHale, is it?, straw chopper for my cubicles to hand and found it quicker to do that way. will say though, 200 it feeds are 8 to 12 m o at the start of winter, other 50 are cows with calves. So the 200 you would only be talking 20 odd kilo a head so give or take half volumes of a fattener or forward store

Best thing I did this year was to chop the feeding straw when baling. The keenan handles it no bother now and I have put plans to upgrade to a tub on hold.

might need to mix cereals with protein nuts/blend and spit back out again. Will a tub mixer do that? I know a Keenan will as someone came and did it for us once.

I know where there is a 14.5 cube abbey tub, it holds and chops 3 bales, has a programmable weigher it is 5 years old (I think) and has only been used for one and a half winters! It's in very good condition.

This is a very simple answer, aimed a first time mixer wagon user, not meant to sound rude!! And sure will get told off!! If you currently mix ingredients with a bucket or feed one on top of another, any mixer wagon will improve this, creates a more level ph balance in stomach as in theory eating a balanced diet throughout the day, ie you having a days food mixed up rather than all your porridge, then all your apple crumble and custard in one hit!! All will mix cereal, nuts, silage and straw etc. Trials have been done to determine best mix, I was involved in one years back and my mix was rated highly, but probably was mixed longer than I do on a day to day basis if im honest. Only ever had a keenan which im happy with, but do believe they rank fairly lower down in more recent trials. All will mix straw, most makes will chop straw, but those machines will be dearer, and ive never had one but believe take a fair bit longer to do a mix, ie to chop straw and mix properly. I only have a small mixer wagon, capacity, obviously depending on wet/dry silage and other ingredients etc is around 3.5 tonne, a 85hp tractor easily drives this, obviously the pto is running with wagon empty, so as adding you have already got momentum if that makes sense. If you start chopping bales im guessing a different story, hope that helps
