What fert for two cuts?

One thing I notice on farms is 'oh we've always used 20.10.10 on our silage ground'
Soil tests have been done and P&K indices are through the roof!

Like mine, but little often keeps its high, and it dosent cost much.

Keeping P&K levels at through the roof levels, isn't recommended as it is detrimental to soil performance.

Keeping levels at optimum makes more sense for soil health.

Soil sample.

The age and composition of the sward is also a facture when it comes to N which is the main element regarding to yield. High levels of perennial ryegrass in the sward will use more N efficiently than older swards whereas recent re-seeds will have 25% higher demand for N.

A crop of silage will roughly remove 4kg of P and 25kg of K per tonne of grass DM so this will need to be replaced.

I didnt say they were through the roof, they are were they are meant to be seems silly to save peanuts using nitrogen for a few year to then have to go and spend alot to raise pk levels again when i can just use 20 10 10 and keep them good all the time.

Kev mentioned through the roof and you said "like mine" so I assumed that's what you meant.

Regardless of how far up the high end of the scale levels are, if soil isn't needing 20 10 10 to grow a crop, it's application is uneconomical, extra P&K in the soil is not like money in the bank, if soil levels are high, applying more than crop requirement can lower productivity of the soil and of the livestock on that land.

I was told by a college lecturer, to think of it as trying to put two gallons of water into a one gallon bucket, you gain nothing other than a waste of your time and mess to clean up.

I do agree that allowing P&K to get low isn't wise, but neither side of optimum is wise.
