How bout brushing against thorn bushes or some other spikey plant and getting one or 2 getting stuck in them as happens.
or even some sort of sharp seed getting under the skin to cause Abscess.

I get a few ewes every year that get a lump under their jaw bone. I don't mess with it as after 3 or 4 weeks it bursts and drains. One ewe had one on top between her nose and eye and that did the same. I've always put it down to thorns but could be wrong. Doesn't seem to bother the sheep when I've squeezed the lumps. And they're still alive.

trouble is if it is CLA them sheep will be 'super spreaders' through your flock.

I've had seen this issue for well over five years (maybe not paying attention to it before then). I have daughters and granddaughters from the original ewes showing no effects at all. Surely a super spreader would cause more than 2 a year out of over 250 sheep?
Going to have to read up on this!

Read up on it /find out yes but don't let it scare you to death,
i mean there's always something up with sheep, i doubt they will ever be totally free of 'stuff' wrong with them

I'm more inclined to think it's cruels, have alot of blackthorn hedges here that the sheep browse on and climb into. Ever had a blackthorn stab you and break off under your skin? It swells up and is painful if it isn't dug out. Think this is what happens to sheep. The discharge from the sheep lumps is serum and blood rather than pus. Still viewing cla information though.

Fig 8: Local abscess unrelated to a lymph node (see below) - this is not CLA.

From the NADIS site....this is exactly what my ewes sometimes get.

a piece of useless information, pre antibiotics, and carbolic disinfectant, infection from blackthorns, was a serious risk, of amputation, of limb.
strikes home hard, thinking on that, and how a/b's and disinfection products, have made our lives, so much easier. Now, a/b resistance, is a major problem, resistance is growing faster, than they can discover new ones. We hear more about sepsis now, than for a very long time.

Yeh...I'm the hero type don't wear gloves. Had some really bad reactions to blackthorn wounds when clearing hedges

Had blood poisoning from one when I was younger, If mother hadn't recognised the symptoms and dragged me of to the DR's straight away would have ended up in hospital
