one full time man here. Guess it's a quietish time of year, plenty of maintenance, clearing up, topping, knapsacking etc. Struggling like hell to get any work done after 4pm. Downs tools, literally, and off. Week off sick a fortnight ago and 10 days holiday coming up which he's entitled to, but muggins now has to do work of two men...

Difficult. I have never employed but been an employee quite a lot! From my point of view I would not want to work much after 4 given that as soon as the combine starts I would be expecting to work all evenings and weekends until the end of drilling. However from what you have said his attitude sounds very poor. I would be happy to stay an extra half an hour to finish a job and I think you may need to have a word with him. Just my view

What's wrong with finishing at 16.00 hrs? If you work an 8 hour day that's what you work! If more work is needed then it has to be paid for at the correct rate by negotiation not stomping around in a rage. I often wonder how some folk manage to get any help with an appalling attitude to their fellow man.

Last place I was at the employed staffs hours where 7 - 6 mon - fri 7 - 2 sat and Sunday off. You could if you wanted do 7 - 6 sat and Sunday if you wanted and stop later than 6 as well if you wanted, there was always plenty of work !.
Harvest was 7 till whenever you finished 1,2 or 3 in morning if you so wished. Rain never stopped play for a day off either as you just went back to the construction side on the normal hours.

I did about 6 months there on and off on the diggers, but I only did mon-fri and didn’t always go via the yard as the jobs where closer to my house than the yard.

hold on, how can you argue about this when we dont know what time he starts in the morning and we dont know how and how little hes getting paid he might be starting at 4am and getting a fiver an hour, knowing farmers thats probably generous.
He must start early to finish at 4 unless they are builders or public sector , or possibly part time
