What is Holistic Farming?

It's what you try to do already, but once you have it defined to you, you start to think you are making changes because now you know of the term used to describe your outlook.

But generally, no-till and many variations of it, get down to the vary fine details of each aspect of soil health, what rotations and other aspects that the farmer has control of, can they do to maintain or improve it. It's a detailed outlook and quest to find ways of making a living off of sustainable methods of soil health and improvement. It differs in that way from just going after the highest yields at any cost.

In My Opinion.

Looking at it as a whole but in detail.
I went to a chiropractor years ago (cost a fair bit) with a lifting back injury - he did the usual manipulation - and then got into asking me how much alchohol, tea, and even suggested transcendental meditation for stress management(tense muscles) -all with the view to healthy body/mind that can cope with normal exercise etc i would consider him to be holistic practitioner.I only went once though:LOL:.

Pity, it looks like you've just missed the oportunity to find out...

I've not done the training so anything I say is IMO only. As I understand it you need to take a step back and ask yourself what you are trying to achieve with your farming. What are your goals? That is pretty scary, as most of us do what we do because we do it. Once you get past there, you can work out your principles and then the methods you'll employ to implement them. At the simplest it is looking at the whole system and how everything interacts, what the positive intereactions are and the negative, from here you refine everything you do until you find the optimum techniques for you and your farm and soils as well as the wider community. What's not to like, it makes for happier farmers and a better world...

I think there is some confusion here. There is no holistic farming. There is holistic management which is applied to agriculture and there is a branded holistic management system with certain management constraints as part of the planning process branded by Alan Savoury. Holistic management is a well established system of identifying all the constraints and opportunities that go toward making a decision and is used by the the British Army amongst others as a management tool. The aim of the process is to be able to ' see the wood from the trees ' to create a plan.

Unfortunately Victoria has passed alot of new planning laws that make a fair whack of what he does impossible over here now...real shame...you need to be isolated but if a someone buys land near you and then builds a house you can be in trouble...

Yes defiantly, in the books and training they talk a lot about how these principals are applicable to any business, not just within agriculture. As the starting point is understanding your mission statement if your mission is to create a lifestyle based around growing crops in a way that respects people, the planet and delivers profit then you'll have to find away to do that holistically.
