.. will allow you to attach to their mains supply?

We are lucky in that there is a 9" main running through the farm which currently supplies our mains water needs but only through a 20mm pipe off a meter.
I am terrified of the borehole failing so would like mains back up and current set up will not cut the mustard.

I'm pretty certain the water board would be more than happy to quote you for increasing your water supply! 😂

We have a 50mm internal ... Hell of a gush when there is no restriction even though there is a 1" bypass meter which it all has to flow through .

Simply increasing your pipe diameter without enlarging the take off point might make a big difference.

An alternative could be a water storage tank fed 24/7 from the 20mm supply

We have an old black 20mm pipe running approx 450m off a 4" main that then connects to our 25mm meter, we have recently put a 250m run of 50mm blue and 200m of 32mm to the meter. I was told I would see a loss of pressure if I connected to our existing 20mm connection with a bigger pipe over a distance.
We are also last connection off the main after the village.

50mm pipe from the meter here as a backup to the borehole, fed to a 3000g tank that is a mains reserve. I’m sure you could have larger than this as your main is 9”

I'm putting in a 63mm pipe. 2km. Village has a short 4" spur off a 9" main. But I'm only putting in a 50mm connection - over that and it's classed as "high risk" and was more faff iirc.

If you install a bigger pipe to the water main, say for example 63mm, the water board will probably only supply it with 2x25mm as they cannot usually live tap bigger than this.

Picture above shows a 63mm pipe fed by 2x25mm this was a supply that was upgraded this year.

2 factors come into play - the pressure drop along the entire length of pipe and the supply pressure in the main will give a flowrate, but the flow through the narrowest part will put a ceiling on that, as water can only run so fast through that orifice. The pressure drop in the pipe is heavily influenced by the pipe diameter, and is within your control. I would reckon that the ceiling would be high enough if the rest of the pipe was upgraded, and would suggest that you do that first. Go up a few sizes in pipe and connect just downstream of the meter, then see how that is for flow rate. Only if it's not enough would you need to ask for the meter to be upgraded too.

Here in south wales they areca bit picky .in new building work you are required to put sprinklers in ,to supply sprinklers with the correct amont of water you need a 50mm mdpe feed water board will not give a 50mm stop tap ,

When I applied I told them what I wanted and they told me what my expected daily max flow would be. I felt 32mm didn't give much leeway for the future, and as we were digging the trench may as well go bigger pipe.
