What is the root cause of overcrowded hospitals?

An underfunded NHS?

Lack of willing applicants for Dr and Nurses jobs?

NHS mismanagements?

Or what?

The photo in the toast thread of ambulances queuing up, can not be made to be normal!

The NHS is an early 20th century model of healthcare, unfit for todays world and unreplicated anywhere else in the world. There is a reason for that. It’s an expensive, inefficient, unfillable beast which does its many talented staff a huge discredit.

It’s time to fundamentally reform it along the public-private mix similar to most other western economies and be done with it.

Despite all the clapping and pot bashing, I don’t think the NHS has had a good war with covid, particularly the GP “service”. There is far more public criticism of the politically untouchable sacred cow.

Can you explain in a little more detail what you mean in so far as practical change.

Demographics. Older population. Fatter, obese population. Treating illnesses and conditions that years ago wouldn't be treated. When a hospice be a more sensible venue than a hospital.

Having recently spent five weeks in hospital it's fairly easy to see at least some of the causes.
1 we have an aging population, the baby boomers of the 1950s and 1960s are needing healthcare increasing demand.
2 its seems people now rush to the doctor for any minor complaint meaning GPs are very hard to get an appointment with if you actually need one.
3 point two means people go to A&E instead, which is what I did, I was actually seriously ill and was admitted immediately, many there should have seen a chemist, some time later I was rushed by ambulance from one hospital to another and was told by the paramedic that hospitals arent allowed to have patients in corridors as it looks bad so they are put back in ambulances after being assessed hence the queues.
4 due to less operations being done due to covid there is a huge effort to catch up this is leading to more people in wards, my section was designed to have had four beds in each bit but has now an extra bed, I presume many units are the same.
5 The cost of treatments are rising due to new drugs etc .

All the above mean despite ever increasing resources there never seems to be enough. One thing I did notice was the large number of trainee doctors there.

As a 17 year old I had a burst appendices & spent a week in hospital then a further week in our local cottage hospital on a ward of 10 where I was the only one under 80, every night I'd go to sleep late & wake at 6am to miraculously find a spare bed on the ward, no bed blocking at that time I can tell you!;)

Healthcare is free to access, therefore people don't care about eating and drinking themselves into dependency onto the state(taxpayers)

Doctors run a closed shop that means there are too few of them and we have to import them from elsewhere.
They are the overpriced key resource and are impossible to manage.
The NHS is run by government and they can't run anything efficiently.
They overpay for drugs, workers, services, energy etc

why cant many of the routine operations, such as hip replacements, be done on a semi production line basis? Like they do in third world countries, where surgeons from the western countires give their time? its be well documented in production line eye surgery in thired world countries? I think that a part of the problem in our NHS is , it suits many doctors to have long waiting lists for routine operations, because of the private , money making option patients can be talked into? Waiting list, Oh your have to wait over a year? go private and pay? I can fit you in next week?

Let a few die. Stop letting them in. Problem is the current government is letting in more than ever? How odd?
Just to many people, if they were "let in" or not is no odds
stands to reason that if there was only half the people those ambulances wouldn't be there as there would be nobody to drive them :giggle: 🐘

Without going into too much detail, just google the German and Australian models of healthcare. They aren't actually any cheaper but the service they offer is far superior.

Even in Norway you have to pay a small fee to see a GP, not enough that it would put you off going if you're sick but enough to weed out the time wasters and chancers looking for paracetamol on prescription.

Our daughter is on the ambulances.
A lot of her time is occupied with a small hard core of repeat offending "nutjobs", they call 999 saying they are suicidal, etc, and have to be attended to, sat with until a police officer attends, and they can then pass on the social worker baton, before moving on to a genuine emergency. The Police are in a similar position of having a large chunk of their time wasted too.
I often ask has she been to anything "exciting"(I know it’s poor taste), but her job is, I bet, 80% shepherding people already known to geriatric services, social services, and the police.
This is not what the Emergency Services are for.

Centralisation to a degree and all that can bring with it.
Less staff, more efficiency until it is not.
An older workforce that is reducing hours or retiring.
Media, "if you have this speak to doctor"
The pandemic and the fears that have surfaced in folk.
An ageing population.
Less fit population.
All mixed together
