We reckon it’s a wood wasp and was on some dead larch I’m burning in the stove. It landed on my leg a few mins ago!!!

I thought it was a warble fly.

I have seen wood wasps in forestry which are way bigger, seem more aggressive, and easier to mistake with an Asian hornet.

This thing is quite docile. My wife’s google reveals some elaborate name of a female wood wasp that lays its eggs in the pupa of a horn wasp or fly??

I think it's some kind of wood wasp, due to that big "tail" or ovipostor on the back?
We don't get the likes of them down here.
