Can anyone identify this? I ran a little farm right on the Devon/Somerset border many years ago, literally half in one county, half in the other, and this came along with me when I moved away. I'm assuming it gets driven into a stone wall or post, but for what purpose? I've used another one for some years as a gate latch, but I don't think that's what it is. Thanks for any input.

Its a spike you drive into the stone wall mortar which holds the wooden spouting. Nornally push the spouting over the flap, then lift the flap up and slide the spouting back upto the flap and secure spouting with screws through the flap. Normally found on barns as the main farmhouse would normally have stone hangers built into the construction of the wall.

I,ve seen it used as a gate latch for a wooden gate. Lift the gate up on and then lift the flap.

Thanks for the replies. Going to sound ignorant here, but what is 'spouting'. I'm thinking it must be connected with stone walls?

With my property being grade 2 listed I still have to use the traditional wooden gutters (spouting) I will try and post pictures tomorrow of the gutter on the normal stone hanger and the Lancashire version of what you have. On my uncles farm in Somerset the barn used spikes similar to yours but the farmhouse had stone hangers like mine.
