What is wrong with the free movement of people?

Dont like "foreigners" coming here stealing our jobs, getting free houses, free money, sending free money back to where they come form - well that's the daily mail view...

Whereas The Guardian view is exactly the opposite whilst hating a large section of the UK population for no good reason at all.

@Bald Rick Nothing.
In this area we have people that freely move for work be it in oil, medical services, food processing, education and a whole host of other things.
It should also be noted that we had a large number of people that moved (resettled maybe more accurate) into this area post WW2 from Poland and Czech republic they and there off spring have been great additions to the community.
I sometimes think those Saxons were no to bad either.

The problem I see with freedom of movement is that large numbers of unskilled workers can move here for an indefinite period of time. This leads to wages stagnating instead of increasing over time as there is always a ready supply of labour. Another problem is that these workers will generate very little tax revenue as their pay is low while them and they're families are using local services such as schools, hospitals etc. Also in can't be ignored that the housing crisis has been exacerbated by high net migration rates, although I accept that there is high migration from outside the EU as well and isn't just down to freedom of movement.

But we need a large proportion of ‘unskilled” labour to do the jobs that a lot of Brits would refuse to do.

(I put “unskilled” in parenthesis because I know of several Poles with degrees gutting chickens in the local factory)

It's all irrelevant as Brexit is dead .

I would love to agree but not sure yet...
Petra was just wondering the other day, if Brexit does die will there be a large and unpleasant backlash against immigrants (such as her friends for eg). I suggested that it was more likely that an angry reaction would be aimed against remainers now.

All the anger is directed at Westminster .

Indeed - that is because those folk were and are economic migrants. Maybe not now so much but post 2004 the £sterling combined with wage rates for skills meant it was more sensible to gut chickens in a UK factory than be a dentist in Latvia. And same is true of immigrants from outside the world. Unless and until the UK becomes a lower value economy this will continue. The next phase post Brexit is sub continent immigration.

Hey ho.

It's always those on the lowest wages that are squeezed to accept even less due to competition from itinerant workers and everybody thinks it's a good thing to squeeze those native workers who aspire to something better than sleeping under a transit van.

I'm waiting to see a cut price solicitors office set up in town run by Indians offering to do conveyancing for half the price of British firms.

Bet hell freezes over first.

Who did these jobs before EU migrants did them? If there wasn't a ready supply of labour willing to work for low pay then maybe employers would be forced to increase wages and that would attract local workers.

I fail to understand those people advocating people moving from their stable country and culture to a foreign country and culture where they don't fit in and no longer have their families as support.

Quite debasing to see others think that financial gain is worth other people being treated as a commodity.

Whilst the UK destabilises, politics fragments, crimes go unpunished & swept under the carpet for decades .. those wearing blinkers blame "Others" they patently dislike for causing problems they never created.

Why can't people have jobs and normal lives within their own cultures, with their families and culture around them ? What is so wrong with that ?

Liberals stealing doctors and nurses from the 3rd world whilst decrying those not wanting immigration .. the world has gone crazy.

This version of life only ever existed in your head. Throughout history people have migrated for economic advantage. The more successful the civilization or economy the more people it attracts.

No.

Economic migration has always been limited by currency fluctuations.

Mass immigration is a modern disease caused specifically by politicians.

Wars caused mass migration but along with that came famine, disease, death, rape and pillage.
