What Lengths Do Thieves Go To ? Someone Was Here Looking Last Night

I've got a small holding, surrounded by fields with thick hawthorn on 3 sides and a fast road on the other.

If you come up my gravel drive it's illuminated at night and has PIR spotlights, at the side what looks like a 6' fence is actually a gate into the back

Last night a man was spotted wandering about in the back with a powerful torch - they thought it was me (but it wasn't) nothing's been taken

I have motorbikes, chainsaws, trailers etc but nothing of particularly high value, everything is older, no expensive cars

I'm surprised I've been visited, more surprised that he came up to the house rather than targeting the sheds and shocked nothing was taken

I've been securing sheds today but how much effort do they tend to go to ?

Surely they aren't going to rip out hedges etc The only gate has an alarmed van parked in front of it

Can anyone recommend reasonable alarms etc

Thanks

perhaps he wasn't after nicking?.....perhaps he was looking for a lost pet?

That’s what I was thinking. Thieves don’t usually advertise their presence

Btw an alarm is a bit of a waste of time esp if you’re rural.
We thought about CCTV then realised all it would show was numbers not faces if the robbers have any sense

They will use as much force as they can muster to get what they want. Locks will serve only to slow them down a bit.
You are talking about people who operate largely with impunity, and without regard to the collateral damage caused.
Digging out cashpoints with stolen machines, for example.

Generally thieves don't wonder around with high powered torches! You also say " they thought it was me". Who are 'they' ?

It could very possibly have been the Police looking for someone following a local incident. They use high powered torches and frequently have to go onto private property whilst conducting searches.

I really wouldn't loose any more sleep about it.

They did over our neighbouring dealers a few weeks ago. Lifted off my double roadside gates leaving the cows free to wander onto an A road, then drove two off road buggies through a 6ft security fence and thick hedge, into my field and away onto the road.
A few days later, they stole the tractor from our local handicapped kids' school. The old pre'65 railway is behind the shed with overgrown willows and a very steep embankment, but they drove the tractor through the fence, up the bank, and away along the old track.
I guess to them it is all part of the fun.

It could also be the local nosey Parker wondering what you're doing hidden away behind your thick hedges. Any recent planning applications?
You wouldn't believe the lengths some folk will go to with regards stopping you getting planning.

What made them think it was you wandering round at 3am with a high powered touch. If I see any lights around at that time or even earlier if it's not usual to see them I start to make enquiries

Hmm don't they make a real mess ?

How do they cope with dogs ?

I have thought about leaving my Rottweiler out but I wouldn't want her hurt
If somebody has been spying your property out ,the mess a few geese make will be nothing in comparison to the mess some thieving scrote will leave ,smashed locks ,stolen items ,,insurance companies using every excuse not to pay out .

you would be surprised at what some people do, recently, a trail cam, picked up a lady walking her dog, without a torch, through woods, 2am, on showing the pic's, I've been doing this for years, harmless. A friend was 'guarding' a marquee, loaded up for a wedding next day, his air bed, was not conductive to his sleeping, 7 people walked through the recreation field, between 1 am and 6 am, most with dogs, not picking up behind their pets, 1 completely p#ssed, and 1 just walking about. But, security in rural areas is a growing problem, police useless, dangerous to go out and challenge anyone on your own, take a gun out, police are more likely to arrest you, we have been done several times, defences, steel bars, good padlocks etc, only kept them out twice, both times they tried really hard, looking at, bars and and padlocks twisted. We let out a shed, for a workshop, to a member of the local 'family', he only stayed about 9 months, but since then, we haven't had a problem, I wonder why!!

Our village primary school was broken into this week and they stole the safe. We are at the end of a peninsula so it’s one road in and out of the village. I was amazed they targeted it
