What lights and where to put them...?

As some of you know, I've put up a shed as a workshop / store / machine shed etc...

One of the next jobs is lighting, and I'm wondering how to go about it...

A smallish shed, I have added a mezzanine type floor as a storage area, under that floor will be the main workshop area, the remainder will be storage for machinery etc.

My thoughts are...

1) A Outside Security / Floodlight.

2) Lighting under the Mezzanine for a workshop, should be well lit

3) A light to light up around the workshop part, so if your working on a tractor for example

4) Light in the storage area.

I'm not really sure where to start, I have had a look at other sheds etc and nothing really stands out, type of light, position etc etc

So, I thought I'd ask on here, all advice gratefully received... :)

its tricky because you are wanting a different source of lighting.in my shed there is general lighting ip 67 doubles,i have led spots over work bench, then some movable led spots when working on machine, outdoor 30 watt led pir are good lights

1)Outside security lights

How much light do you need and how long will it be on for?

Lot of light, SON , high pressure sodium, figure on 3- 4 times cost for similar amount of light in LED, starting at the 250W level. But bright enough to work under.

LED better bet if don`t need so much light or it needs to be on at all times after dark.

10-100W floods available at varying cost and quality, sometimes several lower power will give you better coverage than one big one.

2) Lighting under the Mezzanine for a workshop, should be well lit

Needs to be HF of some sort, days of flickering, strobe freezing revolving machinery, magnetic ballast fluro is over.

Toolstation have a possible bench lighting bargain for the job, kitchen under cab T5 fittings

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Lighting/d220/Kitchen+Lights/sd3253

The Sylvania ones are cheaper than the Eterna, at 12.68 per 1.2m 28W T5 ,its a good contender.

Very low profile, HF ballast, linkable, efficiency comparable to LED , lamp life cica 30K hours , again comparable to LED, cost about a 1/4 of equivalent brightness LED, and they come with a nice warm white lamp.

3) A light to light up around the workshop part, so if your working on a tractor for example

General cover in double T5 IP rated fittings and possibly a couple of well placed 30W LED floods in moveable positions, they stay hand safe warm, don`t want to be fumbling in dark but don`t want glare that stops you seeing either.

Handlamp with removeable rechargeable batteries and charger with spare set.

4) Light in the storage area.

Single T5 fittings. :)

T5 is the diameter in 1/8`s inch of the tube, fatter fluros are T8 and old style were T12.

Available from 6" to a few feet but metric ;-)

Avoid T4 which is no standard and lamps tend to be unobtanium between makers.

T5 runs about 100 lumens watt , 30,000 hour lamp life available with very high colour rendering tubes if you need colour accuracy for painting for instance.

LED fluro replacements are a good match when lights are running 24/7 , pay back period becomes realistic , they are expensive and a fast moving market. Point well made above about lamps with a decent warranty on them.

Ordered a 100w led for outside yard and was sent a 200w instead. Awesome light. So bright and I am glad the 100w didn't come. Not bad for £70.

I put a LED sensor light in the workshop, it operates every time i go in at night for about two min, which is plenty for a lot of things, lets me get to light switch for staying in there longer, also would be unexpected by burgler and possibly scare them off as could be seen from house.
