What old Round Baler?

I've been thinking... :)

I might get a chance to get my hands on some more land next year. If I did, I would be baling some round bales, keeping the middle bit for hay, weather dependant...

So... I'm thinking of buying a round baler!

I know, it's a doolally idea, and a contractor one is the way forward, but, I've always fancied one!

Question is, what would you recommend me as an old round baler to go behind a 60 - 80hp tractor?

I've been used to Welger RP12's in the past, they seemed ok back then, but what were they like compared to the competition...?

Also, are knives essential?

Go On, call me mad, then tell me what you think...!

:)

You're not mad. Trouble is cheap old balers don't exist anymore. You used to be able buy perfectly useable old balers for under a grand. Now the same things making £2k plus.
Next generation newer balers look better value at £3-4k

An old new holland 844 or 848 would be a cheap find, my old one did 60,000 bales with not much trouble, just the odd bearing and chain. If you could find one with 20 to 30k bale count, that would be a good buy for 2 to 3 k .imo.

Solid chamber only, if you cant get a Class 46 a clean 44s with the net up top will be grand.
Keep in mind they take the weight off the back of the tractor so allow for that on the hills.

My old 46 still does a fine job and makes a nice neat bale. You just need to remember you can't go as fast as the neighbour with his mchale!
Easy machine to run and work on but the narrow pickup can be a pain. If I could find a tidy 46 with the wide pickup I'd change, otherwise I've no need to upgrade as long as it keeps chugging along.

Exactly what he said. Wide pick up Claas 46 would be the job. Worth a little more to get the side pick up.

I’d go for a new Holland 648. My neighbour has one as his go to baler for doing a few hundred hay and straw and he gets on very well with it. He pulls it on a JD 2450 which I think is 70 (ish) hp.

A few years ago I went and drove his baler for him for an afternoon whilst he went into hospital for a minor operation. I thought it was a great little baler.

Claas 46 was the baler of choice around here 25 years ago. Used to see them behind Ford 6610s so you'll have more than enough power. If you can stretch the budget a Vicon RF130 would be my choice.

I got an 835 NH out of a dealer for 800 last year, a local baler that wasn't wanted anymore.
The apron chain is the baler really , it goes well and will make a hellish solid bale if you want it to, not fast compared to new but neither am I.
