What paint to use on my tractor?

Looking ahead a fair way now...

Our faithful old DB 1410 is due an overhaul, the rust has set in and he is looking a bit shabby.

Now then, what paint would the experts on here recommend he be painted with?

Reason I ask is that the 1410 still earns a keep, and I have no desire to give him a full concours makeover, when painted he will back on the hedgecutter, and would like a paint that will withstand the bollocking that the flying hedge bits give the paintwork

Thanks all!

:)

Hahahah right im making this up as i go along:rolleyes:

2k will be hard but brittle so it will chip and cost alot also

I would say a polyurethane/synthetic will be spot on
Plenty of primer and a few good coats of top coat will do him justice always have good results from vapormatic paint but it can also chip easy
Sparex synthetic is softer ive found

There you go haters of 2k....

@Selectamatic I'm not going to try to advise on the right type of paint but be careful of any of the off shelf pre mixed paints. Orchid White and Power Red are often the wrong shade and can sometimes be completely the wrong colour. I have paint that matches new, old stock parts perfectly but I got it mixed and it's in a plain tin so I can't even tell you what brand it is. If you're not in a rush I'll be at my paint supplier in the next month or so and I'll get the name of the paint company and the recipe.

Red and white, I'd say will be the best?

If you don't undercoat (controversial I know) and manage to get a good finish using top coat, if it chips, it will chip into white/red not grey undercoat? Consider a small 100mm roller for the big areas to get a good coat of paint on, then when tacky finish with the gun. Only because its a working tractor and you want to seal using the paint rather than shine with it.

If you get the primer tinted the same colour as the top coat the chips won't be as obvious as they would be with grey underneath.

Use Vapormatic paint regularly with no problems. Personally i think you have to experiment yourself to have a feel for the paint. Had a local restorer to paint some wheels recently, admitedly he was told to put some paint on them, came back with just a dusting of silver mist and rust blisters not even rubbed down.Tractor sold anyway but he won't have any spraying to do for me again.

I would be embarrassed to send something out like that, I'm only an amature painter and i wouldn't be happy knowing i hadn't done my best

It wouldn't cast them a thought, to leave it looking rough. But, if you were talking to them they could talk you under the table on the theory of refinishing. And dont even think of asking them to do anything mechanical, putting wipers back on using vice grips.

Think insurance work spoil a lot of paint shops, they dont want anything else .........
