What Pick Up Truck...?

Never used low box in 8 years of use with our dmax(auto), and we have a very steep road into the farm
This is the reason I bought an auto pickup. However, with a big heavy trailer behind, I still often just must use low range with the resultant wind-up. The torque convertor does make a heck of a difference when pulling out of a junction up a slight hill though.
People on the flat and that don't tow 3.5 tons must think "what are these people on about?"

they were the best pickup on the road! great used buy as most were owned and used as cars
The guy I got from ,his wife hated it ,,she couldnt back it as it's got the snug top and it's got smoked glass and she couldnt get the hang of the reversing camera ,,I've found it very handy for hitching up the trailer ,backing with mirrors is second nature after 20 of years of grain trailers .

What is the life span of an auto box doing just farm work mix of cattle trailer and runnin earns with meal and what not with some hill starts? Not lookin for an answer like it all depends on driver etc etc just normal workload with bita mechanical sympathy and not thrashing the guts out of it? And how much it cost to revamp an auto box? Also does the electric side of it give much trouble?

I've never had an issue with an auto box yet [touch wood] and I've been driving them since 1986. The torque convertor is almost a non-wearing part compared to a conventional clutch, so no worries there.
In theory auto boxes are mechanically relatively simple and straightforward to repair, but the problem is finding someone who is willing to do it. So mostly if they do go wrong, they are swapped for a scrapped vehicle's or a factory re-con or new unit. Any transmission repair is not going to be cheap but while I have had issues with ordinary gearboxes, none with automatics [so far].

My Ranger 2.2 auto has now exceeded 60,000 hard farm-work miles and goes like new. It regularly tows the full 3.5 tons on challenging Welsh coast and minor road routes. One part, in New Quay town as it happens, requires the use of four wheel drive in first high to pull up the hill if damp or wet, otherwise traction is lost. Resarting, if it meets a bus or other obstruction up the hill, requires low range even with the torque convertor. I'm frequently down to second gear pulling at 3000 rpm up hills.

A scrapyard pays more for Hilux?
Only people to buy my trucks when I sell them is the scrap man, that's why the resale value doesn't come into it for me.
If you replace every 3 years it's a different matter.

I see and those of us who change every 3/5 years, resale makes a big difference

Not this one
I did warn people about this probability back in July this year if not sooner. It was pretty much inevitable. In the current world economic climate, it will be difficult to find anyone to bail them out, especially as they are a tiny manufacturer with a brand that means nothing to anyone.

To go to market I have to enter a main road on a steep 340 degree junction. Low box is a must with trailer behind. With the td5 discovery I just knocked it into low box, got up to the top of the hill in low box, stopped very briefly then off in high box.
With the new hilux the transmission winds right up going around the corner, then I stop at the top of the hill twiddling the switch and pumping the clutch till it finally releases when it feels like it🤬
I used to have to use low box a fair bit on road with TD5 disco with cattle box on.

3.2 auto Ranger in 5 years of ownership ive never had to resort to low box yet on the road. It just sails up hills like they don’t exist in comparison!

There’s a Ranger 3.2 local to me that’s done under 17k miles and keeps going into limp mode, has been plugged in at dealer and they can’t find stored fault code , driving the bloke mad.... thinks it’s an Adblue issue.

Or EGR. That's the only fault mine has had apart from the diesel cooler springing a leak. Touch wood. It's a 2014 build with over 60,000 hard farm miles.

My 2015 3.2 had egr issues AA disconnected in the end and was fine after that

No oil pump failure ?.. Get ready, it'll bite you when you least expect !.. My 2.2 failed at 70k and luckily got stopped quick when oil light came on. New pump and turbo cartridge was all that was required, but had I known pump could be changed without engine removal I'd have changed it as a precaution with all the horror stories you read.

Oh yes, I know all about the oil pump failure. I asked my service man to change it and the transmission and back axle oil the other week before it had its MOT. He's lost interest in the job I think and only did a standard engine oil and filter change plus the MOT. Not keen on wasting fresh oil by getting someone else to finish the job properly until I get a couple of thousand more miles on the clock. It is a gamble though. I think one drive shaft needs to be removed to allow the sump to be removed. The auto transmission has no drain plug so the sump has to be removed from that too.

Yes that's correct we did ours ourselves it's not too bad a job really. The sump was quite difficult to remove when all studs out as it's stuck on with some very strong glue. Even had gas torch on ours trying to melt it. Ended up bending it a bit as it's quite flimsy but straightened it out on anvil. For the cost of a new sump I'd advise fitting a new one though if you decide to do it.

Hey up Drillman. I occasionally pop my DMax into low range just to stop it seizing up. Don’t know if it matters but at least I know it’s still working!

To the OP I have no advice as to which pickup to buy. All that have been mentioned have their merits. I’d vote auto box for sure. I have a 2.5ltr dmax and happy with it. It is my second one. First one had issues with dpf regen and had to have injectors changed. This turned into a long job due to one being seized in and engine had to come out. Then a long wait for a part of over a month. In meantime dealer lent me both new auto and manual 1.9ltr models. Wasn’t that keen on the smaller engine so got a deal on one of the last 2.5ltrs. Never drove the old one again so never knew if injectors cured the dpf regen issue.

Drillman - I did come across a newish low mileage Ranger 3.2 and went as far as enquiring about a trade. This was just before COVID struck in feb. Didn’t hear anything for a day or 2 then got a call saying they were waiting for another quote on my vehicle. They not really car dealers as such. I would see what it was going to cost and make my mind up. Never heard another thing! COVID struck in UK and I lost interest to chase it up. The few I mentioned it too all tell me I dodged a bullet ;) These were maybe the same ones that asked me why I bought that rubbish when I bought a Landini but when it was eventually swapped for a John Deere commented that it would not be as reliable as the Landini :rolleyes:Personally I prefer the Ford over the Isuzu from the perspective of the drivers seat.
