I have a bunch of around 100 twelve month old calves from our suckler herd.

Breeds are Charolais x, Belgian Blue x, Aberdeen Angus x and Lim x

What sort of price are they worth? They are in good condition. I estimate the weights to range from 350 - 400kg.

I was thinking about selling them once the grass starts growing....

Work around £2.00 kg plus or minus on quality

What markets have you been to lately Walter?

If they are potential R grade cattle they are worth as much, if not more, as anytime this year despite the weather.

Whitland.

Next mart tomorrow and we'll be sending a dozen weaned steer calves to see what happens; around this district, farmers are now buying in forage as supplies have run out.

There is no grass. I'll say that again: there is no grass...

When the grass starts to grow, they will surely be worth £2.50/kg,the fat cattle trade is still rising and they will be cheap to keep for the summer...
Yes, but our bTB test result is up shortly.

From 01.04.13, PMTs and annual test results in Wales will last only 30 days, so shortening sale windows.

Is'nt that just fo herds that have had a beakdown?

Further changes to bring Wales in line with European Union Directives mean that movements of cattle in Wales from TB restricted herds (other than to slaughter) must, from 1 April, be made within 30 days of a clear TB test.

Trade was flying for strong feeding cattle: some lovely commercial Simmentals (possibly from Hirwaun Simmentals?) went through at nice money, classy Limousins in demand as always at Whitland so quite a few cattle at £1,100 etc. General run of strong store at £700-£900 range I thought, but we didn't stay to the end.

But trade was very selective for long keep cattle, so much so that there were some decent little heifers available at less money that it'd cost Julie to rear 'em.

Would they be suckler bred Walter?

Perhaps something like 50% of Thick Farmers ie 12 month old

No, mainly BB or Lim crosses really - the ones that caught Julie's eye were the ones with a bit of frame about 13/14 months old that could go to a small Lim bull in July and calve next year - say £575, plus their keep, would be a reasonable buy in our book.

Julie bought a batch of 14 Simmental dairy cross heifers late last year for under £500 and out-wintered 'em for under £3 per week each (exc, diesel) and they'll go a small (but shapely) Lim Bull this July and Julie expects to get some nice, well-shaped, and framey progeny, even if the dams will never be up to much in the looks stakes.

But she ain't never buying no more baby calves...
