Thinking I may need to up my Wheat seed rates a tad. Min till and straw chopped all this Centuary (until I was forced to plough some because of uncontrolable Rye grass last autumn) been sowing approx 110 kg hec for 1st wheats and 130 kg for 2nd wheats, depending on 1000 grain weights.
What approx are you sowing, Heavy brick clay land here.

I'm starting at 280 seeds/m2 in late September and rising by at least 25 seeds/m2 every week after that. This in light land where establishment is higher than really heavy clay. Variable rate seed, though this doesn't affect the average rate when booking the seed in June/July based on seeds not kg.

250kg/ha up to 350kg/ha, farm saved, cleaned. Start drilling the last weekend in October.

:eek::eek::eek:Hmmm, Definately think I should order more seed.In a good year I get the yields, but a bad year it seems to thin out :confused:over winter. Reason I went to low seed rates was to get the grain without masses of straw,as I made the mistake of selling it in the swath one year. What an eye opener that was, compaction from the forklift especially.thinking of upping to sowing a massive 12 stone an acre.

No harm in taking one field and trying several different seed rates in it. From your standard up to where lee is.

It's easier to reduce tiller numbers from too high a seed rate than to increase them.
Having said that if you need 350kg/ha then you need to question why you are growing wheat on that land anyway.
