I am looking to make changing wheels easier, and was wondering how big of a compressor I would need to run an inch drive impact gun like the tyre fitters have. Thanks in advance.

Local mechanic round here never touched his air driven one again after getting a Milwaukee cordless one. Ours is rarely beaten either.

dont bother with a compressor go with a cordless and it will also be cheaper
I’ve a dewalt impact gun. £150 wouldn’t buy you much of an air compressor and gun

Would a cordless be powerful enough to snap off tractor wheel nuts? At the moment I have a meter long bar on the socket but it gives my back a hell of jolt when they let go.

You're living in the past. A 3/4" Milwaukee will shift nearly any wheelnut. If it doesn't shift it, it'll shear it off.
Don't bother with hoses & compressors
IKWYM. Longer bar.... and then have it so when the nut breaks, it only drops a short way with your weight standing on it.

Better treat myself to a cordless then.
Mines only a baby 1/2 and it’ll loosen anything with a full charge. Really really surprised me. I still use the bar to double check they’re tight just

I bought the most powerful half inch Makita for general use, and run a 4800nm inch drive windy gun off a twin cylinder deutz compressor for the meaty stuff (HGV wheel nuts and stuff larger than 36mm).
The compressor setup isn’t exactly handy… but it’s handier than a stuck bolt stopping the job in it’s tracks.

3/4 drive cordless of any of the major brand are good enough for nearly any wheel nut. But anyone who thinks they can compete with a proper 1" drive air impact like ur tyre fitter will have is deluded.

This I have a dual volt Hikoki 3/4 drive that will undo nuts that my inch drive Ingersoll Rand air gun won't touch
Half the time it’s the compressor that isn’t big enough for the gun.

That's running off a road compressor pretty sure it's big enough.

Might not be producing the psi though, tyre fitters van that comes to me runs airline at 160 psi

Was always lead to believe it's volume not psi for air tools. TBF it's a cracking set up but the 3/4 battery gun is another level.
