What Size Generator?

Aye-up,

been thinking about getting a genny for a while. Could be handy for power cuts to share between the family (assuming we are not all affected on the same day - if so, they can bugger off and get their own!!) and now thinking of doing a show stand so need something there.

If I wanted it to be able to power, say, the fridge freezer, a kettle, the TV, computer and a light or two, what size would I need?

Thinking about it, I reckon the show regs state only silent gennys are to be used, so how do I know what is quiet enough?

Cheers, Pete

how long is a piece of string pete?

My opinion is do not buy cheap!, get a decent make from a decent company.
minimum 5kva i would say.
find your local distributor and they will advice better than me for a starter.

Next question you will need to ask your self is diesel or petrol?

we got 5.5 kva for shearing etc and use it in house for power cuts fine for lights hot water tv fridge and freezer will do cooker on its own bit wont boil kettle its petrol doesnt seem to use too much fuel but probably dont use it that much

Thanks chaps.

As usual, a lot more to it than you think.

Doesn't help that I am a complete electrical dimwit. Never been able to understand electrics at all, no matter how simple or how many times people try and explain it to me!

TR250, I presume the non boiling of the kettle is something to do with needing a heavy load to start with?

  • . FIND THE AVERAGE WATTS
All electrical appliances and motors, should have (by law), an electrical rating plate with the power and electrical requirements shown on it. Find the Watt rating for each appliance you want to use.

    Note:
    kW x 1000 = WattsHP x 746 = Watts
  • See the Average Watts Table below for the Watt rating of some typical appliances.
  • Average Watts Table
  • For Industrial Electric Motors, the power shown on the motor rating plate does not take into account the motor efficiency or starting load – use the figure shown in the Average Watts Table for electric motors.

  • 2. ADD THEM UP
Add up the Watts for each appliance or motor you are going to run at the same time.

    For example:
    5 x 100 Watt Lights = 500 Watts
    1 x Kettle = 1800 Watts
    1 x Toaster = 600 Watts
    1 x 550 Watt Motor requiring 2200 Average Watts = 2200 Watts
TOTAL AVERAGE WATTS = 5100 Watts

Note : If you need to operate a generator for more than 30 minutes, add 10% to your Average Watts total.

..........eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr............

Eh?

Must be some new kind of yoof speak.

Just kidding, thanks for that Roscoe. That's among the easier ways I've had it all explained to me. How do watts relate to Kva? I think gennys are sold by Kva rating?

Pete ,ideally you are looking for super silent or whisper genny and dont forget to count your central heating on the list of things for it to run in a power cut. depends on how much you want to spend really but you would get a quiet 10 kva that would satisfy any show ground
