What size grain store can I build for £100k ?

Assuming all work done by contractors how far will £100,000 go? Only looking at a flat store for dried grain. I understand the cost of concrete is going to be a big part of the bill.

Will be phoning this week getting some quotes but this is all new to me havng never put up a building myself. I'm sure I'll be coming back with more questions but for now I want to know if my budget is about right.

On that budget 80x60 ft would do the job for 1000 tons wheat but needs to be high ideally with no central tunnel hogging room,
More important, how much crop are you looking to store, is it all one crop type?

If budget allows ,go larger,always.

Thank you. Ideally looking for 1,000t storage. Hoping my budget should be enough but needs to include a concrete floor! Any idea how much your floor will cost to concrete @copse ?

Currently growing 3 crops (wheat, s. barley, beans) but considering dropping beans which should make job easier. Beans can go in a temporary store and sold at harvest.

Current store built in 70's and 80's will hold 800t has no fan and no provision for pedestals, stirring etc. Never had a problem with grain storage, having only had a handful of claims in the past 30 years (I can recall 3 but no more). We've always dried and cooled the grain well and if I'm being honest done nothing to it until loading it on a lorry. Have we been lucky? If building a modern grain store what do I need to budget for? How important is a fan?

In the middle of a build here, doing a 100x60 flat floor, 4 meter fill, power floated floor and pedestal man hole covers x 14, I’d need to re check our costs as covid has dragged this out beyond belief, and we’ve also got a 30 ft lean too on the side for machinery etc, but the grainstore part was well under 100k when we started, with them doing all the work, I’ve been doing what I can as I have my own 13ton 360. Correct me if I’m wrong but if that’s full to the brim with good wheat, that’s 1800 ton.

2019 we had built a 60x80 flat floor store 25’ to the eves , 3.6m concrete panel walls , power float Finnish floor and x2 6mx6m electric roller door . Whole job was 100k .

I put one of these up http://www.bluelinebuildings.co.uk/qseries.php 25years ago on my old farm. It did the job ok. But I prefer the portal frame building which we put up to last longer. If your trying to keep it cheap though its like having a round bin except you can keep kit in it. Our was just starting to show slight rust at 25 years but if looked after would do 40 years but not as long as a Steel portal frame.

1,000T GRAIN STORE OFFER
80 x 60 x 20ft 1,000T Grain Store Offer = £37,000*

  • Concrete panels to 3m
  • All steelwork, including web stiffeners & rafter stays
  • Roof, end & side cladding
  • Purlins & rainwater goods
This is on Graham Heaths Website. Obviously ground work, erection costs and concrete on top. (Not an endorsement of any kind, just put it up to show a cost of a building).
As a very rough guestimate, I would say a building can be split in to 3rds. 1/3 building, 1/3rd groundwork erection, 1/3 Concrete.

We built an 80x60 extension last year, with a dividing wall so enough panels to make a complete shed.
With a Martin Lishman floor vent to cool grain.
Cost was around 90k, we did ground works but had to buy about 200t of aggregate.
150mm polished floor was 17k.
Ground works costs can vary - do you need to haul in stone for the base or can you use existing material.

Any figures for the return on investment for a grain store? Not sure we would get many Dragons getting excited by the potential returns from their £100k investment? Mind you.. wheat today £209.. certainly paying to store it this season!

A few years ago and concrete will obviously have gone up a bit, but I put a building up here in 2012. 6” deep with fibres for a 120’ x 60’ shed, with contractor doing all of it, was £20k. We’d done the groundwork & stoned level, they came in and did the rest.

Believe me prices have gone up!

Not sure if I can get it to stack up. However, does anyone here regret putting up a building?

I could spend £100k on a second hand tractor and have grief with it. Once a shed's up it's there for my lifetime.
You won’t regret building a shed, even if its at your limit in a year or two you’ll wish you’d built it bigger

I have a blueline that I rate. They are good and cheap. Probably not what the OP wants but we use ours for grain and I would have another one, certainly as a GP shed.

I have loaded grain out of sheds that had gullies cut in the concrete and grills over these to provide sections of drying floor which I believe would be better than pedestals for ventilation and cooling. Does anyone have anything like this in a new building? These were 25 yo + stores...
