What size press for the farm workshop?

I made one a few years ago , to take out the king pins in Magirus Deutz 8 wheeler steering axles . . Needed 100 tonnes (yes!) I used a Hydraulic pile driver ram ,6", bore that I scrounged from a "Hush Kit" when it was finished with outside a hospital . I used very heavy cross section channel and "H" section for the frame . I had an electric motor and hydraulic pump from a factory scrapping a big machine . . I think it will have about a metre travel and something like a square metre "work space " . We finished with the "maggies" a few years back , but the press is still here , it isn't eating anything , and it's always there if needed . In fact we had a chap from a local company came along and said "we haven't anything this heavy , can you press this out for us ! " I have a photo somewhere , if I can find it I'll post it .

30 tonnes to shift an old Ifor hub bearing.

Excrement!
Many years ago I visited a local engineers to press a drive hub off a Tasker spreader hydraulic motor, the key was half sheared.

At 15 tons (without movement) the guy operating the press put a bag over it, and said from here onwards you can operate the press.

It shifted at 20 tons, when I looked round, their wasn't a soul to be seen :ROFLMAO:

Sounds like the problem with some of these presses is they aren't built solidly enough. The rigider they are, the less energy they store like a spring for a given force and the less they go bang when the siezed parts finally give.

A lot of these smaller cheap presses will be built strong enough not to break, but are still not as sturdily built as they could be and still flex quite a bit.
