What speed do folk bale at?

Large full swath and drop the speed, lifting snakes of rows at 8mph is never going to be like anything.

Was lifting 30ft today at 3 to 3.8mph.

Faster you go the more you get done, the slower you go the more you get in a bale.

Depends on time availability
I'm not sure about this. Have you ever done any trials to prove it?

Would be interesting to weigh a 10k forward speed bale and a 5k one.

In theory the slower its going in, the more time your giving it to pack it. However I've found myself going 5k in a 30ft bout, so equivalent of 15k in a 10ft out back of mower and still makes solid, tidy bales. McHale v660.

If I'm going to finish a field of silage or straw and only have a short bit left I've seen me absolutely crawling along so I don't end up with a small bale left and you get a lot more in the same size bale

No I'm meaning grass. The thing with high speed round baling in my opinion is stopping at a consistent, safe speed, to get even bale size. If your going at ten k, it takes a bit to get stopped, by which time a fair bit more grass will have went into bale. So need to set bale size accordingly. Then the bale full alarm goes off as you come out end of swath and get a small one. Obviously can't go as fast baling headland, so bale full size needs tweaked again.

@KB6930 will have a version on this too. He does a lot more round baling than me. @DrDunc will know also.

Will be baling silage this week so will do a trial and film it.

Set the early warning beeper to 95% then if your at end of a row flick it into manual if needs be.

Not that I bother. I just accept there be a few uneven size bales in the field.
