What techniques do you use for drilling into grazed stubble turnips?

As above. I ask as I have seen the top 2or 3 inches of top soil set like concrete after drying winds in March /April, where stubble turnips have been grazed by sheep. So soils not at all friable for D/D compared to if it has been just overwintered with no animals compacting the top soil.

We graze with cattle on light land. We plough it. If you have a perfect winter (this one was close to it) then the bulk of the land would go with a strip till drill (we have one, and a disc drill), but gateways and supplementary feeding areas are a mess so the plough comes out.

Depends on what crop you want to put in behind it, if it was a cereal then you might get away with drilling with a tine drill or something with an opening disc.
In nz some people would use a cross slot to drill post brassica as it's like sending an ice breaker through the sea ice...
(I don't believe they are a low disturbance drill in a lot of situations but generally give good results)

One option is to open up the top layer with a carrier or the like. break the cap & let the weather do it's thing.
Not direct drilling though.
