I’m planning on making some sheep feeders I want to make the timbers of of similar stuff that goes on the skirting of cattle feed fence so I know the size but what type of wood should I ask the timber merchants for I want something that will last and won’t shrink too much to let meal out

You'll either want a treated timber or rough sawn, depending on the merchant you're using they probably won't offer a choice of type, it will just be the size that dictates it.
It's usually pine.
If you want a hardwood type then you'll be looking at a significant price difference.
You might be able to get syberian pine, still a softwood but that bit more hardwaring due to being slower growing.

when i was a youngster the old man bought some troughs from local timber man , they were elm.still got one or two about though a bit tired now .that was over fifty years ago

I think I've seen wooden sheep troughs advertised as being made from larch before.

some 10" plastic water pipe will probably be just as cheap as decent timber, cut in half long ways and make some feet for them, it will long out last timber and be lighter to move about
You can buy plastic ends from JFC to make your own from twin wall pipe

Plenty of ash around with dieback if you have a local sawmill or man wit.h a Woodmizer.

Just buy metal troughs you can pressure wash them leave them outside throw them on the loader/in a trailer with out them falling to bits and they’ll last for ever

Sorry should of been clearer they will have a steel frame and hold a loader bucket full at a time of tmr so we can have one hopper per yard of 60-70 ewes and put the loader bucket over the gates once a day and fill the hopper. Want the ewes to always have fresh food coming to them but lambs can’t get in the troughs is the idea

ah, in that case you want some 10mm stock board made from recycled plastic, comes in 8x4 sheets just like plywood, you can cut,drill,screw,nail,bolt it just like ply and it won't rot

Yes the sides that would be good but maybe not solid enough on the floor to be lifter about with the tines

be fine with a couple of braces under, got some adlib hoppers here made with 3/4" ply and a metal frame, only used inside so no lid
longer but not forever.
Our tmr is mainly 30%dm silage it eats metal for fun we used to have bateman troughs on some feed fence for the sheep ate it through in no time galvanised as well. We’ve got some pretty old wooden troughs that are good as new think it’s red wood

I usually use travis perkins as I get a bit of discount and if it's unusual sizes the would get it in from soar Valley timber, not had anything they don't stock for a while so not sure if they still use them but probably do.
Also worth trying the old Carson fletcher, gibbs and dandy now, they can saw stuff themselves so might be useful.
Timber prices have gone up a lot so try all the merchants In town if you don't like the price you're given.. Jewson and buildbase

Just get a price on scaffold board, its a handy size for that job, fairly durable and thick enough so it won't bust if a tele handler gets close
