Hello chaps. What do people charge for delivering haylidge? I've got a maxxum 125 and teagle titan with bale extension, get about 18 bales on a load if you cram them on, probably more like 15 with wrapped bales, though ive yet to try it. Trying to work out the best way to charge, per mile or per bale - and how much! 17 miles mostly down big open roads.

Thanks in advance

£40/hr if hauling 17 bales
£33/hr if hauling 14 bales
It's only fair to base it partially on trailer size
Some seem to think they can charge the same with a small trailer
I sort of get your point, but surely in this case the OP is more than likely using the same trailer regardless of the size of the order.

17 miles each way ? if so stick another 6 quid on a bale for a 15 bale load, won't be far out

You need to charge so much an hour regardless if one bale or 20.we all do far too much for sod all.ring a delivery firm and ask them.it’s ridiculous charging a differant amount for differant size loads.

so you would charge the same amount for delivery to take one bale on a bale carrier on the back of the tractor as 20 on a big trailer ?
If you charge by the hour then a bigger load is going to cost more as it will probably take more time to load, tie down and unload and probably a bit more time on the road given a few hills

I deliver woodchips every now and then and charge by the hour. I have had people sending me a message asking if I can deliver 100 km. I think they assume I do it for €50 full stop, not €50 an hour.
I did do 50 odd km a few times.

It's about efficiency.
5 bales on a 250hp tractor and 36ft trailer is going to cost more than a 100hp with a 12ft trailer.
My point is that some with smaller trailers think they can charge the same as larger trailers.

But less per bale.
That's the true cost

And the big problem is if the contractor charges enough to make a profit the job is un economical for the farmer. If the the contractor charges an acceptable rate for the farmer he is probably doing it at cost or worse at a loss. Its a no win scenario

So let the contractor do it. If your problem is that others can do something for less you either drop your price or go do something else.
