What Topper?

… and take twice the horsepower. That's never going to look like a lawn in one go anyway!

I've go a Starcut Spearhead. Same as the Multicut. Great for a mulching but it's a steady job on really thick stuff.

Better to go over once than three times. (y) Look at the photo, half the stuff is still stood up. Power requirement is proportional to what material is going through the topper and at what rate determined by the forward speed.

You gotta laugh at this, attached to an MX Magnum lol.

I saw no point in topping any of those stubbles (n)
Why do they always run duels :banghead:

McConnell Rhino Topper 9 here, had 3/4 over the years, works well doing circa 1200ac/year , I was tempted on buying an old disc mower so I could go over 10mph as the rhino leaves strips of grass where the wheels have trampled if you go over 10mph forward, 12mph backwards works well though. 75/80hp 2wd tractor powering it.

Topping maize stubbles is a thing- corn borer. Pray we don't ever get it in the UK for real.

Look at the photo - it's working in a jungle of scrub! Power requirement is also variable according to the design. Flails do a better job but will take more hp/metre for the same job.

I was told it's brand new
The topper in the picture in that link has been used, look at the chains on the deck, they are tarnished , if you still doubt me look at a real NEW multicut or any spearhead topper and you will see what I mean.
I'm sure it didn't but damn it that topper in the link nearly looks like it got a link of paint, there is hardly a shine on it at all.

On top of that, Altho it's stated as new its the older model, the rope on the current ones are now changed to two pieces with a different hanger system on the A frame, that's not the end of the world mind but if your buying new you might as well get new..
And on top of all that, I'd say it's got the bipi rubber flex damper between the T box and the gearboxes if you looked where as the very latest ones are now cumming with two rubber discs fitted to a straight shaft much like the Mc Connel rhino type.
But best let @AFM confirm this, it's his machine.

Thanks will take a closer look at it and a new one

Flails are great for chopping rushes providing they don’t have hammer flails. You need y flails for them. The hammers are to heavy and push them over and strip them rather than cut them. That said, who is going to swap flails over each time they want to do a specific job. As previously said, a mower in the 5k range is a heavier built machine than a general purpose topper.

Does the McConnel rhino 9 in line topper do a better job on the wheel runnings or are they much the same as most other inline machines and pop back up in 24 hours?

Yes.
The Updraft blades really do lift the grass as it cuts.
Have run one behind tractor on rowcrops and 650 tyres and you don’t get left with longer bits that spring up again the day after cutting like you do with most others.

I have a Kidd 240 (2 rotor, 2.4m cut) behind the tractor type. I had a 3m flail before which I liked because it spread the toppings over the full 3m, but I needed to get a narrower machine because I have to do a bit of narrow road work to get from my workshop buildings to my paddocks. It was difficult to pass badly parked cars.

The other reason that I bought the Kidd was that I have some fiddly little banks and depressions that the flail would scalp in places. The kidd runs on skids and attaches to the lower links only, so floats over the awkward bits.

Never really been a problem with wheelings it has 2 rotors and 4 blades which make a lot of draft which I guess pulls it up .

They are all separate companies, in competition and each doing their own marketing and show stands.....but all owned by one parent company. A strange set up.:scratchhead:

Thanks for that, I'd been wondering too. Do they use different components, based on what posters further up have said? So that there is an order of higher spec between the different makes, or something?

I have a 2m Berti flail mower and it cuts everything it looks at. I bought it (very) second hand for about £700 and it's been fine for what I need it for. Aren't Teagle badge engineered Berti's - or do they produce some of their own too?
