Next question.
Single or twin rear wheels?
I asked the isuzu rep what the difference was and it's nothing. They both tow and carry the same (albeit the twin wheel has a lesser payload to account for extra wheel)
I have puzzled over this for years. Was recently told the benefit is you can have more weight over the twin wheeled axle. Doesn’t change the total payload (apart from reducing it by the weight of the extra wheels) just allows you to put it where you want.

You've sort of answered your own question.

You have to buy more tyres but they don't wear quite as fast.
Twin wheeler is a little more stable, especially when towing.

They're a little better on soft ground when loaded.

I used to drive a twin wheel transit with a tail lift and 90hp engine.

It went everywhere in the snow and muddy sites!

We sell bottled gas and we’ve been through every type and configuration of truck going. We run a mixed fleet of canters, cabstar and Isuzu grafters.

Anything not ‘cab over’ I.e Iveco, transit etc forget it. Not reliable and not built for what you need. All of our trucks are custom bodies to accommodate gas cylinders so I’ll narrow it to the 3 above.

Mitsubishi Canter

We had a number of 2008+ models and they always broke down, brakes were shocking and the turbo went on a couple, avoid like the plague as it’s through Mercedes who don’t support the product.

Nissan Cabstar

We have a couple in the fleet. Good carrying capacity, overall problem free and nicer to drive than the Isuzu or Canter with a good turning circle being a cab over design. For towing I wouldn’t recommend as suspension and engine are softer than others.

Isuzu Grafter

We’re replacing old Isuzu’s, cabstars and canters with these, brilliant turning circle, can tow 3.5T with 1.5T in the back EASILY. Derated 7.5T and the 150 engine is powerful. Watch out when empty as it can be bouncy and gearbox takes some getting used to. Rust can be a problem on the chassis.

I’d get a grafter given my experience.

Interesting. I've been advised to steer clear on the cabstar style by a few people who say the driving experience isn't nice

Also, I’d get twin wheels ANY day. We bought one cabstar in a single wheel rear axle and when loaded on the back it squirms along the road. ALL our new trucks are twin wheel, for stability more than anything else.

The old Cabstars had big rubber bumpstops on the back axle. Once they were sitting on them you could load as much as you liked. The newer ones had a tiddly bumpstop that sat way too far from the axle. Common “fix” was to cut off the bracket and refit it upside down so it did actually function.

Quick update on this. Started looking properly early this year then the world stopped.
then few weeks ago spotted a 2015 iveco 3.0L twin wheel. Brand new alloy drop side back. And barely run in at 160000 miles. Never towed nor done any hard work.
Well. What an absolute joy to drive. Done 3 big loads this week. This load pretty close to the max 7t max train weight and it just played with it.
Always rated the isuzu for towing but this is in a different league.
Very pleased with it
