What was the first farm animal you owned ?

I remember brother and I having a couple of pigs to fatten. I then started keeping rabbits for meat . A local woman had lots of them and her farm was the collection point once a month. A lorry then took them abroad, think it was to Holland .

You’ve reminded me. I actually had a couple of fattening weaners before I had sheep. Bloody tasty they were too!

Dad started with rabbits both tame and wild ones

Pure Texel ewe bought at an in-lamb sale at Carlisle. She cost £200 and had a single tup lamb the following March...


She's long gone but still the only one I've ever owned myself - the rest are all in the businesses.


First purchase I ever made on my own, was a Texel tup lamb at Castle Douglas. I'd only be 15 or 16 and dad stood back and let me get on with it.

£100 he cost. Went off his feet (became lethargic and lost all appetite) the following January and died.
