What would it take.

What would it take for you to give up farming ?
Serious question this one. With the way we farmers are being treated and in some quarters vilified what would it take for you to give it up. ?

Not a lot. If I felt like it, I'd give up tomorrow. Well, not quite because I'd have to arrange a TB test and sale, but the decision could be made tomorrow. I'm certainly not going to start a merry-go-around of soaking capital into extra slurry storage or exporting slurry to other farms if any would even take it. The public can drink imported pop and factory slurry/meat/gloop as far as I'm concerned.
There are several dairy farms in this area that have expanded or popped up in recent years on borrowed money that are now in severe financial distress. What for? Why have they done it? Why leave massive debt to children who will despise them for it, and that's even if they can avoid being foreclosed.

The only " joy " is driving classic blue scrap metal. If it becomes compulsory to use leccy tractors, any more rules / licences / certificates from the likes of RT, or a continuation of high input costs coupled with decidedly meh crop income and I'm retiring completely. Been renting 1/3 of my ground out for spuds lately. It's quite nice watching stuff rather than doing stuff TBH.........

A decent payout, the proposed 2.35 x annual SFP is nowhere near enough especially for smaller units. We are both getting pretty demoralised at the moment but I guess our main thing would be our landlord wanting his land back!

I’d stop farming tommorrow and my life would improve dramatically
Rent the farm out/contract arrangement etc so someone else dealt with RT and all the rules
But my staff would lose their jobs and homes which would become holiday cottages
And the local economy would suffer to the tune of £100,000+ with me not buying the services of local mechanic, local diesel, local rat man etc

I’d love to stop
Wouldn’t need any Govt incentive

Wish I could answer this one.family farm around 220 acres,160 arable and rest in stewardship but ending Feb.getting by and I love it but getting fed up with all Manor of things from red tractor and other regs, spending money for no return and stupid rules too.59 with no wife or kids but love being around with my dogs.i don’t want to walk away but it’s so difficult and no idea how future will pan out.cant see elms helping much, don’t want a farm full of trees either and not keen to rent out to see others do half a job and rushing over work with zero regard for quality of work.have had and will continue to have sleepless nights over this

I’m 52 farmed or worked on farm since 16. Currently in a very fortunate position money wise. Two young girls and a younger wife. Body I’d slowly getting worn out. kids Unlikely to ever farm but I’ll keep going just in case there is a glimmer of hope. Like travelling south in winter but can only do a week at a time before I get twitchy and have to get home to work. Not looking forward to making the retiring decision. Farm would sell fir 20 million but tax would hurt so rather rent out and do some driving to feed the addiction until the urge passes. As for what would it take. Health would be the biggy then having a kid take over. Then I’d bow out and let the reigns go.

You can’t continue farming just to please other people…you only pass this earth once and have to be as happy as possible….if you’re not happy you should just rent it out
