What would one expect from a 2nd hand machinery purchase.

Absolutely, I expect it not to be brand new. Just asking the question as to where the line is.

A handler retailed from a main Dealer, Should have a working handbrake, working SLI, and probably a lola cert?? otherwise if it drives and lifts up and down and the lights/wipers work etc when its delivered that's generally about it.

There's plenty well worn 10 year old handers out there IMO

I'll just say what the problems are, otherwise there is no context to it.
N.b I am not complaining - probably not the right word to of used in the OP. I am just merely asking what people expect from used machines.
I haven't spoken to either dealer yet or maybe will not. I am not "slagging" them off as the service was good from both off them.
All issues are probably solved straightforward.

Fertiliser spinner, left hand opening ram leaks - alot.

Telehandler. A few things I didnt notice when a viewed, but they are all things with age. However - grabs won't stay open. They will close on gravity, this obviously interferes will its functionality.
Cab fan. Didn't work when I viewed but was told it would be. It certainly works but no air actually comes through the vents.

🙂

Grab closing on gravity is possibly nothing wrong with the handler, some makes require a check valve on the attachment as they are open to tank when spool is centered.

What make handler is it?

Well now, when I have bought from main dealers, almost every thing has had an issue, but they have been sorted out with any problems or arguments, from ''The Trade'' sadly often bits not sorted that were agreed to be sorted, such as lights working, once lights had been taken off, so I suppose that was one way of sorting the problem. From farm sales, mostly in fair working condition. But as kit gets more complicated, it is becoming a bit of a nightmare for everyone trader and buyer, lets face it, sometimes we just trade up to something newer , but often kit is got rid of for a reason.

Slightly off topic.... do main dealers that sell S/H stuff make much of a margin ? Dos it vary between dealers ?

In my experience, you just have to accept faults with S/H stuff. Sometimes you get lucky and only spend £ on them. sometimes it's £££££££££.
Mostly bought S/H over the last 30 years, but buying a 10 series Ford is completely different to buying something modern. Seriously thinking buying new only from now on.

Hi,
It’s all relative. If a main dealer buys something at right price they can make money. Some buy and budget in repair cost when buying . Some merely buy and aim to trade it out as what they paid . It normally depends if they have the franchise or not

All merlos need a check valve for grabs on 3rd service. Ours has one on the headstock so same valve does all attachments, but many just fit them onto the attachments.
Not very expensive and a nice easy fix for the grab issue.

This cuts both ways. All to often I have heard of people looking at a bit a s/h kit, shaking the salesman's hand as sold in working order.

Then the invoice arrives a week or two later with the words 'sold as seen ' or 'no warranty ' or similar on it.

That is not fair or reasonable either if a machine is sold in working order, and for whatever reason turns out not to be. A badly leaking ram could very well fall into that category, as any oil leaking onto the ground has very serious environmental liabilities I'm afraid.
Invoice normally arrives before machine in my experience not a week or 2 later.

I thought dealers couldn't use the sold as seen get-out-of-jail card? Everything they sell has to be as described and fit for purpose.

I'd ask them to repair the leaking ram and sort out the grab, as both render the machines unfit to use. A dealer who values his good name wouldn't mind doing so at the cost of a few quid. If nothing else, he'd want you to feel you could buy from him again in the future.
