What would one expect from a 2nd hand machinery purchase.

I thought dealers couldn't use the sold as seen get-out-of-jail card? Everything they sell has to be as described and fit for purpose.

I'd ask them to repair the leaking ram and sort out the grab, as both render the machines unfit to use. A dealer who values his good name wouldn't mind doing so at the cost of a few quid. If nothing else, he'd want you to feel you could buy from him again in the future.
Correct , it's either working or spares or repair .

I could go to most dealers yards and find faults with their sh machinery, it depends how major or minor to the asking price .It should be sold in safe and relative condition for its age and use.
You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Did the grab come with the Merlo ? If yes then it should have a check valve fitted. If not then it's hard for the dealer to know you were using a grab,
As for the cab fan older Merlos never had a great flow of air
Try talking to the dealer they are not all bad ones.

Nope, grab was already here. I wasn't aware that a check valve was needed until it was pointed out earlier in the thread.
The cab fan is a little disappointing. It wasnt working at all when I viewed and was told it would be going. It sounds loud enough but no air throught the vents.

Unfortunately all Merlo’s need a check valve on grabs.
most of the older Merlo’s rely on the fan blowing the air around, there isn’t much trunking for the vents and the fans were more noise than anything else

surely by buying from a dealer as opposed from a private person the buyer has certain rights under the consumer act etc ? the dealer cant just get out of this by saying, stating sold as seen ? i think by law they have to supply a operators manual with the machine as well ?

I was having a chat to one local dealer, and they had given up on tractors, nearly bankrupted him with repairs, but some operate rather as if they are private sellers with a lot to sell!

you forget that you are not a consumer , the same righs would apply to farmers selling machinery to dealers if any were to exist !

I always try and be straight when doing a trade in, tell dealer of any known faults, works both ways imo , would expect the dealer i know not to sell me a known pile of sh!t. If buying off someone i don,t know, it always makes me uneasy if they state "sold as seen" on the invoice. In my eyes there basically saying i will sell you this contraption that i know fu#k all about, but don,t come back here if all goes pete tong.

I'll just say what the problems are, otherwise there is no context to it.
N.b I am not complaining - probably not the right word to of used in the OP. I am just merely asking what people expect from used machines.
I haven't spoken to either dealer yet or maybe will not. I am not "slagging" them off as the service was good from both off them.
All issues are probably solved straightforward.

Fertiliser spinner, left hand opening ram leaks - alot.

Telehandler. A few things I didnt notice when a viewed, but they are all things with age. However - grabs won't stay open. They will close on gravity, this obviously interferes will its functionality.
Cab fan. Didn't work when I viewed but was told it would be. It certainly works but no air actually comes through the vents.

🙂
I buy and sell older Merlo’s. I go through them and they are repaired as required even if it means there is no profit. You win on some and lose on others. I was trained to do it right and sell everything with a LOLER cert. Sadly there are some dealers that aren’t so accommodating or thorough

At the price of things nowadays I’d want the item to be fit for a seasons work without touching it (unless it’s a few wee niggles) or at least honestly described if it needs work, which is why I only buy or trust a very few dealers.
What I’d expect from the majority is it to be bought out of an auction for a few hundred stick a 0 on end and a basket case tbh from half of what I see out there.

Swap the hoses over on the ram. See if it then comes up but not down. If so it could well be the quick release fitting on the end of the hose.

The ram should also have a check/lock valve. It might be possible to remove that and connect hoses direct to rule it out
