Got a neighbour who is of 'travelling' origin . Bought a field off my cousin for a fortune and set up camp . Has a number of dogs (approx12) which are a nuisance but tolerable . He has fell out with most around here but to be fair not with us ....till this morning .
Two of his dogs (a big Alsatian and a terrier)was chasing our cows and has bitten the end of her tail . I'm immediately on the phone to him and he promised to come down straightaway ,the dogs ran off and he never turned up so I drove up into his yard with my OH. I asked had the dogs returned back to which he said they weren't missing ! .....and then my phone rang ,another neighbour ringing up asking ..di I know who owns an Alsatian and a terrier as they are running down the road to the next village . When I then relate the phone call to him he goes off the deep end big time ....and I mean BIG TIME ! I have never in my life seen anyone in such a rage and decided to retreat to my pickup and just ring the police . I warned him that I'm not standing for his nonsense and that I will be ringing the police unless he calm s down and talks in a reasonable manner . Next thing his fist is through the window smashing it and my OH and myself covered in glass with some in my eye . Then without warning he breaks down like a little child whimpering . My OH ,who has a bit more patience than me starts talking to him and finds out that the Alsatian had attacked his misses the day before and in his rage the dogs ran off. I'm still for calling the police but my OH persuaded me to back off and wait for a while .
He has promised to pay for a new window for the truck and any losses on the cow but I doubt we will see anything off him without a fight .
Question ......should I have called the police or have I let him get away with it .

Not sure
Having read your post and reread it @Hfd Cattle I can see why you are in a quandary.

Have had similar situations myself, and the background makes a difference. Yes it sounds stereotypical to say that but, if it's someone of that kind of upbringing it's often best to leave it. This kind of situation is usually a make or break with them. Unless other people are in danger etc. I wouldnt be calling the police, even though its uncomfortable leaving it. This would change imo if the problem persisted.
If it was someone with a more "average" upbringing (now waiting to get pounced on for that one 🙄) I would be calling the police.

You only have to look at a couple of videos on YouTube or somewhere of how travellers sort things out. Calling the police usually stirs up s*it.

The above is my opinion and I will reiterate, if someone is in danger then call the police. Otherwise, quietly get the dogs shot and buried at the bottom of a big bonfire pile.

I know it was your cousin that sold him the land, but it's never worth it, a fortune won't get rid of these fukers.
These gypo b@$+@rd$ are a nightmare if you fall out with them, so it's just not worth it.
I'd call with him tomorrow and talk it over in a calm manner.
I'm all up for going boxing if needs be, but you'll never win with these types.
So unless you're planning on selling up and moving, it's best to be on good terms and have an understanding with him.

Talk to his wife. He has mental issues and needs help. She may well be grateful that someone has seen what he is like and it is not her in the firing line this time.
If the dog returns to him, offer to shoot it for him and take it away, as he obviously cannot bring himself to do it.

Be as nice and friendly as possible, but DO report it.
Preferably speak to an inspector and keep it anonymous.
Never mind the dog biting someone, this guy is going to end up killing someone.
Once I did not report an incident and someone ended up dead. I have always blamed myself for that.

Not everyone has a gun and wants to shoot a dog.

Report to the police I think. You are lucky your eye is not damaged because those fragments of shattered glass windows can blind people very readily.

As for the dog, if it has attacked someone already and is not under control the police need to know. Could be an innocent bystander, another dog, someone's livestock or a child next. I'd never forgive myself for not speaking up.

Police probably already know of him and will send someone around for a chat. Won't be linked back to you.

If a dude is a gypo and has mental health problems, that last thing you want to do is go to see his woman. I see no good outcome from that.
