Yorkshire water gain access to a sewage works through my land every 2 months they send a tanker to pump sewage and take it away for treatment. Twice now..... twice..... they have left the gate open and let my cattle out onto the road 25 cows and 25 calves and a bull, was the first time (June last year) when the driver actually lifted the gate of its crooks and laid it on the grass verge o_O,and just left it. Today it was only 4 cows and a couple of calves that made it out onto the road and a farming neighbour rang me and we got them back in.
I had a real go at them the first time but it seems like they have not learnt How would you take this forward? I do not want it to happen again.

Send them a bill for £1000
Then change the lock and tell them they have to phone you when they need access
^^^^^^^
This, plus insist on a written grovelling apology from the driver. Copy your MP.

If they don't like the cut of your jib, keep it locked and tell them the price doubles every time they upset you further.
Advise anyone found tampering with locks goes head firth into the sewage plant.
(I've had a long day....does it show?)

Is the gate difficult to open and close?

Obviously they shouldn’t let the cattle out, but if they have a right of access why make it difficult? It is you that will be inconvenienced by having to let them in not, them.

I imagine it will be a subcontractor and probably the same man (CBA) yes it will inconvenience me having to unlock a gate 2 x a day yes the gate is very easy to open but this shouldn't happen. I am going to tell them that the gate will be locked in future and they will have to contact me to get in.

I once had a lorry turn up for a load of straw out of a field. Gate was locked and he couldn’t be bothered to phone or wait. No problem he had a battery grinder for the occasion 😡

Speak and write to someone senior before locking the gates to ensure they know the issues. With the potential for a serious accident then I think they will take action. My experience with some sub-contractors is that they will take every short--cut once the supervisor is out of sight so they need to have an obvious sanction. One company deducted £500 for any minor H&S breach such as taking a hi-vis jacket off to keep them on their toes
