Could be the planted seed crop in its growing season being subject to some Roundup drift as something like one part per 200million is enough to distort tuber growth. Traces in a washed out sprayer were enough to disable our last crop of tatties about 14 years ago

Aminopyralid contamination without a doubt. (Forefront and equivalents).Sooner it's banned, the better. Just Google it to see the damage it's causing due to it ending up in FYM.

Might not be from the FYM, could be a soil residual from 1 or 2 years ago.
wonder what the ground has been sprayed with for the last 2 years?

It could be from straw which was sprayed with something the spuds dont like. a bit like cattle fed on silage which had been sprayed with Forefront then the resulting fym put on potato ground caused problems. Forefront only allowed on grazing grass now.
When was that rule made?
It could have an old horse muckheap mixed in with pigmuck

Read the Label!

Grazing grass only. After final Silage/conserved grass taken. Restriction on manure use.

It will get withdrawn again at some stage, I presume.

You implied that forefront on hay was banned recently, i thought that was always the case.

Worst I have seen, doubt manure residues involved, too severe, and I have seen a lot of solanaceous crops boggered with aminopyralid.

Contaminated watering can used for lawn weedkiller perhaps, drift from cackhanded lawn treatment, mixed up fertiliser and used 'lawn feed and weed' instead of the rip-off stuff sold to amateurs as fertiliser. Spuds fantastically sensitive to hormone products, tomatoes even more so.

Worth remembering that aminopyralid & clopyralid (nearly as bad) only decompose in soil not in composting nor in muck heap. Could pigs have been bedded on straw from astrokerbed OSR?

I planted a few drills of spuds in the garden last year. Two drills had really rotten dung left over from the year before. Got some more from a different source for the other drills. The first two grew as normal but the rest looked identical to the op's photo. Done a bit of research which suggested aminopyralid contamination. Asked the source if he had used Forefront T anywhere. He said yes. Had sprayed it on grazing ground which then got away on him and he decided to cut it and put it in the silo. Went from silage to dung to midden to my veg patch.
Did he read the label? "Yes, but I didn't think it would matter". Doh!
