What's going on?

The 2 guys you took on, are they British? Just out of interest. And how did you word your advert to get such a good response? What are you doing differently to the rest of the industry do you think?
Yes the whole team is British, has been for some time, foreign staff didn’t suit our block calving system there was too many variables to there day. We had an agency guy just before covid but as soon as he thought the border might shut he was on the plane the next day.
I don’t think we are doing anything different to a lot of people, you have to pay well and have good working conditions. if it came across that we don’t sometimes struggle for staff then we do but lots of sectors do.I think the industry thinks we are alone but we are far from it as others have said

there will be some very worried processors
My A## largest milk factory in Australia owned by Saputo. They won't pay enough money locally to keep up with the contracted prices (their price is $6:80 per Kg and most are north of 7:10 for larger operators and I know the rumour mill said one of supermarkets was offerring close to $8 per kg for conventional milk. Saputo is trucking milk 500km north to run the factory.

I think staff is only going to get worse for Ag industry. As a self employed farm worker/farmer I'm doing 80 hours a week (for others and my own stock) and have just taken on feeding cattle at weekends for 4 hours a day because I can start at 4 and finish at 8 before it comes light, he just can't get anyone and I want to keep his grass keep.
ATM I am desperately looking for a young lad to start shearing, I said I will supply them with all the kit and pay the same as I get paid but after the first day crutching lambs (I'm trying to train them to handle sheep and the hand piece in the winter) they don't want to do another day.

Often wonder if I could make this pay over here.
Agree with it all but not sure I can get grasses and other plants drilled without glyphos to prevent competition. Interesting video, already read the book

I’ve looked round. Yes it’s good quality work. But some of the bullshxt figures going around for the works done has no foundation in fact.
we were given a tour around the 'off shoot' hotel, beautifully done, cheapest suite £500/night, a taxi ( jd mule) to take them under the main road, to the main hotel, not quite sure why, the offshoot, had heated indoor pool, restaurant, 3 chefs, 'lounge' with bar, table football, all hand carved figures, 40 suites between the 2, and pretty well fully booked.
Each suite, on the o/shoot, had a walk-in shower, bathroom, mini kitchen, sauna, sun lamp, selection of barber coats, in case it was wet, to go to taxi rank, pool or restaurant, we didn't see the top suites, or got told how much ! But its not just the hotel and gardens, they are building and renovating houses, all around, and everything done to the highest standard. The aviary, built to house the falcons, is huge. When you drive around, and see the amount of houses bought, and awaiting p/p or restoration, it is truly staggering, they buy, they pay, and you 1 year, to move. You say bullshite figures, l don't think we can visualise, the amount of money, being spent, and wasted there, get on google maps, any building with loads of vans parked up, is probably theirs. He even owns the car park, of the 'stags head' at yarlington !

Does it matter how much he spends if he’s enjoying what he’s doing

not really, plenty goes into the local community
but the sheer size of what's happening there, causes plenty of gossip, and some gossiping is good, like who's farm is he going to buy next, or house.
the downside, between him, and all the housebuilding, there is no labour worth having, left for others.

@Bald Rick judging by the prices at the Woodmarsh sale looks like there is still plenty of appetite out there for dairy...

TBH its an odd one as I really don't think there is an appetite for expanding at the moment. Guess peeps are buying better quality stock rather than just adding numbers which are keeping prices keen.
