ollie, double what you think, you might get closer.
while it has brought a huge amount of money into the local economy, along with the guvs housebuilding project, what will it do in the future, one day, the newt, and all its off shoots, and there's a limit to how many houses can be built, will cease. The farms won't be let out, the newts houses, definitely not 'affordable', the money train will stop.
Where is thr money coming from?

Well you say that but i recently spoke to a friend with a 600 cow autumn calving herd who was talking up AYR calving to spread the massive almost unbearable workload of block calving 🤷‍♂️
People still complicate “simple” system, block calving isn’t for everyone it’s a mindset and a few peoples interpretations of “block” is interesting

for me Having to do a longer list of jobs 365day of the year is a no go! Thinking about it makes my head hurt

It depends on your facilities, good facilities geared up for block calving means it's easier, you'll still have a higher work load for 4 months of the year (2months at calving and 2 months for serving) but the rest of the tike you'll have a hell of a lot easier time and even have 2 months when the cows are dry where you could be in the position of struggling to find things for staff to do!

Vice versa if you have really good facilities but they're geared up for all year round it's a piece of cake too. It's harder to have time off especially if you don't have good employees but you know everyday that you've got cows to go dry, calve and serve etc so there becomes a point you can do it with your eyes closed.

The point is good facilities for whichever system = easier and better for yourself and staff (meaning happy staff = happy you)
sh!t facilities = hard work, bad for you and staff leading to poor staff retention even if you're paying lots or a decent human being! Poor staff retention = more work for you leading to you being tired, grumpy and hard to work for causing a never ending loop of people not wanting to work for you!

Many of my friends are ex dairy farmers, they were forward thinking, worked extremely hard, invested in machinery and modern buildings, they built up profitable businesses, which was their downfall, not the milk price or regulations.

Family members simply refused to leave the farm or be bought out, this resulted in uncles, aunties, nephews and neices all working together causing friction, until the brains behind the operations left and soon after the dairy side went too.

High property prices, new family members entering the farm business via marriage, combined with other family troubles are what is causing the closure of many agricultural businesses not just dairy in my humble opinion.

Too many ridiculous stories like that but I think things are turning the corner now . Friends Uncle tried forcing the farm to sell up and ended up having to put 600k back in. As he'd drawn so much over the years for cars, holidays and school fees.

apparently, 0.01p on every text sent in the far east, he also has vineyards and estates in s africa, and a luxury millionaires play ground hotel complex - similar to what he is doing here.
unofficially, the rumour is, getting his money out of s africa.
whatever, or wherever, it comes from, there seems to be a bottomless purse. One thing that gets my seal of approval is, everything is done properly, to a very high standard, and once the 'newness' has weathered, it will look fantastic, but it is an obscene waste of money.

Imagine going on to Dragons Den and asking for a mulit million investment in a new dairy enterprise with an optimistic 25year payback and you want the investor to also commit to milking at least twice a day for at least 6 days a week... the dragons would soon shove you back into the lift!
They would want you to milk 3x 🤣🙄

Entrepreneur announces his first few pitches:

1. 'I want to buy a Valtra T234'

Investors (including LF) *visibly interested at this point*: 'Do go on...'

2. 'It will be a low impact, high sustainability index milk from grass type system...'

Investors *near salivating now*: 'sounds grand'

3. 'I want to calve AYR...'

Investors: 'I'm out!'

Wealthy couple from South Africa made their fortune in business of some kind and now spending it. As nice as the area is and I've no doubt all the development is nicely done I don't know how the business case or plan will unfold. Brought a lot of money into the local area though.
