Belt baler 100%
For quantity in bales JD 960 type I don't know the new numbers
Closely followed by Massey/Fendt these will also give you good reliability
I'd expect kuhn to be next in line for quantity but they're a lot lighter built
Then McHale and all the rest will follow on somewhere behind for density and reliability.

If your not wanting to spend much you'd pick up a decent vicon 4216 for not much money.I've had one since 2012, done 24k bales changed chains once an only done one bearing.only bale straw with it.
Its high denstinty packs them solid.will bale everything. even short stuff through a case combine!.it's fast too in perfect conditions I've baled 115 an hour.

A lot of folk on the west swear by Welgers, unsure if they mean pre-Lely days or not though. We've a Claas 340 here and it's fine in good conditions but as soon as the crop is damp it becomes a nightmare with her throwing net too soon and having to jump out to reset the knife. The small damp grass is also hellish for building up on the rollers and the smaller grass jams in the corners of the rollers so you have to constantly keep pulling it out to save bearings. Fine in dry conditions and a good crop though, but how many of us get perfect conditions!

I would avoid another Claas

if you are wanting a belt baler there is only one vicon 52xx series . heavy or light bales to suit the market. picks dry, wet, grass up no bother. straw ijust gobbles it up all day. 3.5 to the ton for the wagon. positive net system. fast tying, fast backdoor. whats not to like.. runs rings round the competion that i ve seen.

If net is catching early, its too slack

When I kept cattle had a Claas Rollant. You could bale through puddles and never have a mouldy bale. I think the old rule of thumb was less than 13lb / sq ft the bale can breathe. Somebody mathematical needs to convert that to new money. Worst was JD, every bale in middle was mouldy.
I intended to buy a NH with a mix of rollers and belts which meant you could adjust density and size.

Is it the soft ground letting you down, or just damp straw?

Appreciate it doesn't answer your question and not a quick fix but have you looked at putting an applicator on the square baler and using balers choice?

Got a friend down near Lurgan running the system on his 187 and is well pleased with it, im sure he would be happy to chat about it.

It does have its limits too all the same ...

his baler does have balers choice fitted but he changed his combine to a rotary so ripe straw and wet season

Have a 186 with balers choice on, straw still needs to be super dry and cleared once baled. Rounds can stay in field

Think just stick to 4 foot
I'll still stick to what I said .

JD for sheer quantity in a bale quickly then Massey/Fendt or Welger if second hand then the rest following behind.

Straw still needs to be fit . If it's gonna stay out for a while I'll happily bale up to 25% if it's damp but if it's green is a different story.

I'm on a fendt rv160 and getting good hard bales consistent at 250kgs + of dry straw at 4ft 4 ish at full pressure. If it's a bit iffy you can just knock the pressure off and if it's really dodgy soft centre it but at that stage you usually need to be not baleing it.
