Recently got some new hens delivered, young ones, not quite ready to lay yet. One of the hens toes (claws?) is very crooked, what is this? Do I need to be worried? It seems to manage around fine.

I understand it is either genetic, or it is environmental, in the latter it is supposedly a result of cold floors in the brooder & or heat and humidity when incubating.
Nothing can be done, if they are on a hard surface they will slough the skin, so watch for infection & bumble foot, should be ok on grass.
Dont breed from her.

We have the same problem with the turkeys. The breeder company chap said about slight incorrect temp in the incubator causing it.

I had one with feet like that years ago, I was told it was because the broody hadn't turned the egg. I've got a duckling at the moment with a useless leg, he seems to have learned to hop! I'll leave him as long as he's coping.
