Just looking at taking some grazing and the whole field looks like this. What's the problem?

We see it a lot on farms where they follow potatoes with grass reseeds. The first year it comes some right funny colours. I assumed it was the disease left in the soil from the spuds? Graze it out and the second winter it’s nice and green. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Grass will go yellow, red or even look purple due to combinations of the weather and conditions, particularly if there is ponding or the soil structure is boshed, like after potatoes.

It makes for a bit of variety for the sheep that’s for sure!! “Purple or red grass today girls?”

Looks like mildew has had a go.

Good liming will sort it by giving the sword some vigour through nutrient recovery but that lot needs mowing, baling and chucking then start over

The field has definitely been in potatoes in the last few years! I think we'll maybe give it a miss as it's all to fence of we want to graze it!

It will come right in time. Nutrient and general husbandry helps. It tends to be transient rather than the stuff will totally die. Growth may be curtailed but by spring next year the grass will probably be roaring along. It won't hurt stock to eat, either.

Winter grazier nightmare , seeing winter covers go yellow with rust , sheep dont like it much , they will eat it , but its bulk rather than growth , tread it out in the frost and will shoot behind after some rain , Never see it much in high clover content grazing , assume the nitrogen helps heath of the plant .
