Wheat BYDV Aphids

If aphids are already in the crop they can spread out, spreading BYDV with them, so in that case I’d spray using something like Mavrik.
If you can’t find aphids in the crop then maybe there’s a case for not spraying, but when drilled as early as that I’d say it’s high risk and spray. My agronomist has recommended spraying winter barley drilled 3rd week in September here in Lincs. I’ve done it. I can’t afford a significant yield loss and I defer to professional advice.

They are new ones on me. We use Mavrik which is supposed to be kind to beneficial insects and “Mansure” liquid manganese which we buy in an IBC. It lasts a fair while. I’m no expert. Just an amateur. There’ll be qualified folk on here much more knowledgeable.

not used an aphicide on wheat since the 1990s
drill from 20 sept onwards
only bydv is where i have cereal (oat ) volunteers sprayed off post drilling

drilled 1housands of acres over the years and only had a handfull affected

in the 1980s we drilled barley from the 6 september and often had aphids on cereal volunteers second wheats and barley after wheat

bydv was bad on very early planted and early emerged cereals

not sure about early sept planted in northumberland
last week of september on no cereal volunteers clean seedbed the risk is low

the aphids that carry bydv are cereal living aphids
aphids on rape do not carry bydv
